We’re Here Now Films. We crew Birmingham shoots, and we make films of our own.

Agencies, production companies and brands book our crews, and so do teams flying in from the US and Europe. A Birmingham day might be an office on Colmore Row, a hall at the NEC, a towpath in Digbeth or a stage at Digbeth Loc., and our producers know who has to say yes to each, from Production Central WM to the Canal & River Trust. If you need the film made as well as shot, that’s our video production in Birmingham.

Every role on a Birmingham shoot. Twenty-four of them, each with its own page.

Rates and set-ups

Crew rates in Birmingham. The benchmark, our rate, and what goes on top.

We price every role against the APA/Bectu card: the rates the APA agrees with Bectu for commercials, and the clearest benchmark the industry has. Each role’s page sets our day rate against it, and that rate goes to the crew member in full. On top go our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, on everything we book for you, kit included. Birmingham adds a few lines of its own, each shown separately: parking suspensions at £18.90 a bay, the Production Central WM street permit, and, for an older van inside the A4540 Middleway, the Clean Air Zone at £8 a day (checked October 2026). If we take the production on, it’s quoted as a production instead.

Two ways to book

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record?

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
  • Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
  • Send the full price before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day
  • Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its permission and its public liability
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
  • Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
  • One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote. VAT on top of both. 50% by card when you book, 50% on receipt of the final rushes.

Worked example. Crew hire: a DOP and a sound recordist for one day £1,568 + VAT
DOP, day rate£850
Sound recordist, day rate£550
Booking fee, 10%£140
Insurance, 2%£28
KitTheir own, or hired in at the same 10% + 2%
Total£1,568 + VAT
Worked example. Full production: the same two and our producer, before kit £2,220 + VAT
DOP, day rate£850
Sound recordist, day rate£550
Our producer, day rate£450
KitAt cost, under the same 15% + 5%: a two-camera interview kit is from £765 a day
Production fee, 15%£277.50
Insurance and contingency, 5%£92.50
Total, before kit£2,220 + VAT

Every day rate is for an 11-hour day including lunch, with overtime at card rates, agreed with you before it happens. The card is the APA/Bectu commercials rates from 1 September 2026, fixed until at least August 2027. Each role’s rate is in the crew above, and set against the card on its own page.

Services

Everything around the crew.Kit, places, permits and the rest.

Most bookings need more than people. We sort these with the crew, and each one gets its own line on the quote. If you’d rather sort them yourself, each one has its own Birmingham guide: who says yes, what it costs, and how much notice it wants. The permits are also summarised just below.

01

Kit rental

Wet hire with the crew’s own kit, which often comes in cheaper, or dry hire from the kit houses: Media Dog Hire at the NEC, and Wex Rental, collected from Wex Photo Video on Hagley Road. Specialist kit can come up from London or across from Manchester.

Blackout and green screen studios take interviews and product days. Set builds go on the quote with the crew.

Props and wardrobe

Hired props and period costume come from the RSC’s stores in Stratford-upon-Avon, or up from London and Manchester, and our stylists and hair and make-up artists run them on the day. Replica weapons need an armourer on set, and are cleared first with Production Central WM, which brings in West Midlands Police.

Permits, parking and drones

Filming in Birmingham: permits, parking and drones

Filming on council land in Birmingham goes through Production Central WM, the West Midlands film office, which took over from Film Birmingham and covers the seven combined-authority councils: Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Dudley. On a full production we apply for all of it; on a crew hire it’s yours, and we’ll tell you who to ask.

Who says yes

Production Central WM for streets, parks and council buildings, through its Open Brolly portal: Birmingham City Council lists the Library of Birmingham, the Council House, Highbury Hall, Moseley Baths and Cannon Hill Park among its locations. The Canal & River Trust for the towpaths and the water, Network Rail for New Street, and the owner for anything private.

What the street permit costs

Birmingham’s 2026–27 street filming permit is £84 for a crew of up to ten and £191 for 11 to 24, plus VAT; a parking suspension is £18.90 a bay, and applying inside two business days adds £182 (checked October 2026). A crew of 25 to 74 pays £357. Charity, student and travelogue filming pays no fee, and street permits can’t be refunded.

Insurance and the rules on the day

Production Central WM asks for at least £5m public liability and a risk assessment before it issues a permit. Payment comes before the permit is issued, filming after 23:00 is agreed in advance, and only the police can stop traffic, with their time charged.

Parking and the Clean Air Zone

Bays are suspended through Production Central WM at £18.90 a bay, for technical vehicles only, parked next to the filming. Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone covers every road inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, around the clock. A car or van below Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol pays £8 a day, an HGV or coach £50 (checked October 2026). It’s paid on GOV.UK, up to six days before, or by 23:59 on the sixth day after; miss it and the penalty is £120, or £60 paid within 14 days.

Drones and the airport zone

Birmingham Airport’s flight restriction zone is a 2.5-nautical-mile circle around the airport, plus zones off each end of the runway, up to 2,000 feet. Flying inside it needs air traffic control’s permission, through the NATS portal, with at least 14 days’ notice. A drone permit from Production Central WM is £229, with a flight map, RAMS and £5m to £10m insurance, and five working days’ notice (checked October 2026). With road closures, allow six to eight weeks, and the landowner has to agree as well. Birmingham Airport on drones

The canals

The canals, Gas Street Basin and Farmer’s Bridge Locks among them, belong to the Canal & River Trust: online video from £196 an hour plus VAT, five working days’ notice and £5m public liability (checked October 2026). Requests go through the Trust’s FilmApp, and it allows no recreational drones. Canal & River Trust filming fees

New Street

Birmingham New Street is a Network Rail managed station: corporate and commercial filming is £750 an hour for up to ten crew, two hours minimum, plus VAT, weekdays 10:00 to 16:00 or after 20:00 only, with up to £10m public liability (checked October 2026). Less than five working days’ notice adds £500, and filming can’t run into the peak hours. Network Rail filming fees

Sources

Every figure here was checked October 2026, with Production Central WM (its 2026–27 permit fees and Code of Practice), GOV.UK on the Clean Air Zone, Birmingham Airport, the Canal & River Trust and Network Rail. Fees change, so we confirm them on every quote.

and vet crew

A call first, then a paid trial on one of our own shoots before anyone goes near a client’s set. We check references and past work, and rebook the people who do well. For schools, hospitals and care homes, we book crew with current DBS checks.

We book crew who live in Birmingham where we can, and bring them in from Manchester, London or Bristol where the brief needs them, with the travel on the quote before anything is booked. If a building wants every name, vehicle registration and kit list before the day, from an office on Colmore Row to a hall at the NEC, we send them with the booking.

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Crew in Birmingham?
Join the list

We crew Birmingham shoots, from interview days to conferences at the ICC and the NEC, and we’d rather book crew who live in Birmingham than put a unit on the train from Euston. We pay you your full day rate on every job: our fee goes on the client’s side of the quote, not yours. Joining is free, and we only post real jobs. Openings at Here Now Films

Hiring a film crew in Birmingham: questions

How much does it cost to hire a film crew in Birmingham?

You pay each crew member’s day rate, which goes to them in full, plus our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance on everything we book, kit included. A DOP and a sound recordist for the day comes to £1,568 + VAT. Birmingham adds its own lines to the quote: parking suspensions at £18.90 a bay, Production Central WM’s street permit from £84 plus VAT, and, for a car or van below Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol inside the A4540 Middleway, the Clean Air Zone at £8 a day, all checked October 2026. If we’re the producer of record, it’s quoted as a production instead: everything at cost, plus a 15% production fee and 5% for insurance and contingency, and every production starts at £9,500.

What’s the difference between crew hire and a full production?

Who’s the producer of record. With crew hire, you or your producer run the shoot and carry the production: we find, book, brief and pay the crew, and book kit or travel if you want it, for 10% plus 2% insurance. With a full production, we take it on: our producer plans and runs it, and we book and pay for the crew, kit, locations, the Production Central WM, canal and Network Rail permits, and travel in our name, on one contract. That’s quoted as a production: everything at cost, plus 15% and 5% for insurance and contingency.

How far ahead should I book a crew in Birmingham?

Our team reads every brief within 2 working hours and comes back with names and the full price. What usually sets the date is permission, not crew. Production Central WM asks for five working days for a small-scale shoot and four weeks for a large one; seven days for kit on the highway, 14 days for a residents’ letter drop, and 21 days for a road closure (checked October 2026). The Canal & River Trust wants five working days too, New Street adds £500 with less than five working days’ notice, and a drone inside Birmingham Airport’s zone needs at least 14 days for air traffic control.

Do I need permission to film on a Birmingham street?

On council land, yes. Filming on council land in Birmingham goes through Production Central WM, the West Midlands film office, which took over from Film Birmingham and covers the seven combined-authority councils: Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Dudley. Applications go through its Open Brolly portal. Birmingham’s 2026–27 street filming permit is £84 for a crew of up to ten and £191 for 11 to 24, plus VAT; a parking suspension is £18.90 a bay, and applying inside two business days adds £182 (checked October 2026). Production Central WM asks for at least £5m public liability and a risk assessment before it issues a permit. Filming after 23:00 has to be agreed in advance, and only the police can stop traffic. The canals need the Canal & River Trust and New Street needs Network Rail, each on top. On a full production we apply for all of it; on a crew hire it’s yours, and we’ll tell you who to ask.

Can you fly a drone in Birmingham?

Yes, with the right permissions. The landowner has to agree too, and over the water the Canal & River Trust charges £179 an hour plus VAT for a commercial drone and allows no recreational ones. Since 1 January 2026 the pilot needs a Flyer ID from 100g and an Operator ID from 250g, or 100g with a camera.

How do parking and the Clean Air Zone work on a shoot?

Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone covers every road inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, around the clock. A car or van below Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol pays £8 a day, an HGV or coach £50 (checked October 2026). It’s paid online, up to six days before or by 23:59 on the sixth day after; miss it and the penalty is £120, or £60 within 14 days. Parking bays are suspended through Production Central WM at £18.90 a bay, for technical vehicles only, parked next to the filming, and a yellow-line dispensation takes five working days. Each goes on the quote as its own line.

Can you film at New Street or on the canals?

Yes, with the owner’s permission. The canals, Gas Street Basin and Farmer’s Bridge Locks among them, belong to the Canal & River Trust: online video from £196 an hour plus VAT, five working days’ notice and £5m public liability (checked October 2026). Requests go through the Trust’s FilmApp.

Can you book a studio in Birmingham?

Yes, on the same quote as the crew. The city’s studios include Steven Knight’s Digbeth Loc. Studios, home to Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man; Curzon Street Studios in Eastside (Studio A is 14 by 17 metres with a 6.1-metre grid); and the BBC’s Tea Factory in Digbeth, due to open in 2027. We check what’s free for your dates, and on a crew hire the studio goes on at the same 10% + 2% as everything else we book.

Can you be the employer of record for an overseas production?

Not in the payroll sense: most UK film crew are freelance. Instead, your contract is with us, a UK company. We contract and pay the UK crew, hold £10m employers’ liability, and send one invoice, so you don’t need a UK company to shoot in Birmingham. Your own travelling team stays on your payroll. If you’d rather we ran it as your production service company, we’re the producer of record and our policy covers the shoot, £10m public liability included.

Do Birmingham crew bring their own kit?

Many own theirs, from camera packages to lighting kits, and it goes on the quote as its own line so you can compare. Otherwise we hire it in: Birmingham kit houses include Media Dog Hire at the NEC, and Wex Rental, collected from Wex Photo Video on Hagley Road. Specialist kit can come up from London or across from Manchester. Kit we hire in goes on at the same 10% + 2%.

Are your crew insured?

Yes. Our insurance on a crew booking covers two things: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included. In Birmingham, Production Central WM and the Canal & River Trust ask for £5m public liability and Network Rail up to £10m at New Street (checked October 2026), and on a crew hire the certificate they want is yours.

Where’s your team?

Our base is in London, at 124 City Road, with bases in Manchester, Bristol and Cornwall. Birmingham crews are booked by our producers, with crew from Birmingham where we can and from Manchester, London or Bristol where the brief needs them, and the travel goes on the quote before anything is booked. New Street is 1 hour 17 minutes from London Euston on the fastest trains, about an hour and a half from Manchester Piccadilly and an hour and a quarter from Bristol Temple Meads; Birmingham International, for the airport and the NEC, is ten minutes out (checked October 2026).
