Film crew hire/Birmingham/Studios and set builds

Film studios in Birmingham. Stages, coves, green screens and set builds.

Birmingham’s drama stages are in Digbeth, where Steven Knight’s Digbeth Loc. Studios was home to Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, and at Curzon Street in Eastside. For product, interviews and anything keyed later, there are blacked-out studios with green screens in Hockley and south Birmingham, hired by the day, and an arena-sized floor in Redditch, just south of the city. Here’s who has what, which ones publish a price, and how a set gets built, with the crew booked by our producers.

01 Which kind of space

Stage, blackout studio or a room with character?

For builds

Sound stage

A big, quiet box for builds: commercials with sets, drama, anything with walls that move. Digbeth Loc. Studios and Studio A at Curzon Street in the city; FBN Studios in Redditch when it has to be arena-sized.

Booked by the day or the week, and quoted by date.

For product and interviews

Blackout studio or green screen

A blacked-out room with a cyc or a green screen, for product, interviews, music videos and anything you’ll key later: Birmingham Film Studio in Hockley, B30 Studios in south Birmingham, and the fixed green screen in Curzon Street’s Studio B.

Ask whether the white cyc is in place or put up on request.

For interviews

A room with character

A boardroom off Colmore Row, brick and steel in a Digbeth warehouse, or one of the council’s own buildings, like the Council House, Highbury Hall or the Library of Birmingham.

Council buildings are booked through Production Central WM. Its location fees run from £92 to £289 an hour, plus VAT (checked October 2026).

Worth asking first

For a one- or two-person interview, a studio isn’t always the answer. The client’s own floor in the business district, or a converted works in Digbeth, says something about the company that a green screen can’t. Our guide to filming in Birmingham: locations and permits is the place to start.

02 Stages

Stages in and around Birmingham

The stages a commercial, brand film or drama is most likely to book, from each studio’s own pages, checked October 2026. None of them publishes a day rate.

In August 2026 the British Film Commission named the West Midlands the UK’s eighth official production hub. Production Central WM, the region’s film office, will help find studio and build space, and its own list adds the NEC, Utilita Arena and repurposed industrial buildings to the stages above.

The BBC’s Tea Factory on Bordesley Street isn’t a stage you can hire. It’s the BBC’s new home in Digbeth, finished to its first stage in April 2026 and due to open in 2027, for The Archers, Asian Network, Newsbeat, 1Xtra, Radio WM and Midlands Today.

On a stage, the lighting plan sets the bill as much as the floor. The gaffer brings the kit or hires it in, with a spark or two to rig it. Our guide to film equipment hire in Birmingham lists who has what.

04 Our bookings

Rooms and sets we’ve booked

The first three weren’t in Birmingham, and each says where it was. They’re here because the same calls come up on a Birmingham shoot: a studio at short notice, a quiet room, a set dressed from nothing. The last is how Digbeth’s own spaces work.

London · Mar 2026

A studio in four days, for AlTi

AlTi Tiedemann Global needed an announcement from its Global Chief Investment Officer, Nancy Curtin, filmed within four days. We found a studio, booked a crew under NDA and filmed it on 23 March 2026, a conversation lit to look clean rather than staged.

Short notice narrows the list to studios that answer the same day and say what the day includes.

Hackney Road, London · Nov 2024

HIDE and LOFT, Perseverance Works

About 2,000 sq ft of daylight on a top floor for AlTi’s interviews with three senior staff on 12 November 2024, 14 cast and crew in all. We booked the floor below as well, to keep noise off the sound, and set up the afternoon before.

In Digbeth the main line into New Street crosses on brick viaducts, so a room beside them means holds for trains. Ask before booking.

Upper East Side, New York · Sep 2026

A library dressed from empty, for Nevis × Focus

A panelled library came empty, so everything on screen was brought in, down to the chairs, on a set we designed for three interviews and a three-way conversation on five cameras, all in one afternoon.

A dressed room can stand in for a stage when the build is furniture, not walls.

How we book it · Birmingham

Digbeth’s warehouses and works

The estate that lets the Custard Factory, The Bond, Fazeley Studios and Factory Works takes commercial filming, with rates on enquiry. It can’t give permission for council land, Gibb Street included: that goes to Production Central WM.

Checked October 2026. A street scene outside needs its own permit.

05 Set builds

Set builds in Birmingham

A set build runs in four stages: design, construction, dressing and strike. The art director designs it, set builders and scenic painters make it, the props team dresses it, and the same people take it down and clear the stage.

Birmingham’s scenic workshops include Seedbed Studio in Aston, which builds for theatre, film, TV and advertising: carpentry, metalwork, CNC cutting and scenic painting in its own workshop, then installation on a stage or a location. Marklew Productions, which set up Birmingham Film Studio, hires staging, set pieces and furniture and has its own set and stage design team. When a build needs more hands than are free in the city, builders travel in from London, Manchester or Bristol, with the travel on the quote.

On a stage, ask about load-in and the floor before anything is drawn. Curzon Street’s pages say nothing about builds, doors or load-in, so we ask; Birmingham Film Studio loads through a ramped roller-shutter door, and FBN Studios takes a truck straight onto the floor.

On location, Production Central WM’s code of practice applies. Sets are built to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, a temporary set standing more than 21 days from construction to removal may need planning permission, and scaffolding and lighting towers go to the film office at least seven days ahead, from a certified supplier. A cherry picker or scaffold permit is £62 plus VAT (checked October 2026).

Through us, an art director is £675–878 a day and a set builder £341–512, before the 10% booking fee and 2% insurance. The rest of the art department is on our props and wardrobe guide.

06 Costs

What a studio day includes, and what costs extra

The rate

Mostly on enquiry. Of the studios on this page, only B30 publishes a price: green screen from £800 a day and the live studio from £995 (checked October 2026).

What’s in the day

Ask before comparing. B30’s packages include cameras, a lighting rig and a studio technician; at Birmingham Film Studio the truss grid and the power distribution come with the room.

Set-up and strike

Usually extra, and on a build they can be most of the booking: a room set can need days on the stage before anyone shoots. Ask for build and strike days priced on their own.

Parking and load-in

Birmingham Film Studio has free parking and a ramped roller-shutter door; B30 has off-street parking and a roller shutter to the floor; Digbeth Loc. Studios lists plenty of site parking and EV points.

The Clean Air Zone

Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone covers every road inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, around the clock. A car or van below Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol pays £8 a day, an HGV or coach £50 (checked October 2026). Birmingham Film Studio says it sits just outside; check where any studio sits before the vans are booked. More in our guide to shoot logistics in Birmingham.

Power

Check it against the lighting plan. Birmingham Film Studio has outlets from 13A to 125A three-phase, included in the hire; B30 lists a 63A three-phase supply.

Insurance

Every studio wants a public liability certificate. On a crew hire it’s yours, as producer of record; on a full production it’s ours, naming the studio.

07 Questions

Film studios in Birmingham: questions

How much does it cost to hire a film studio in Birmingham?

Most Birmingham studios quote on enquiry rather than publishing a rate. The one we found with prices on its own site in October 2026 is B30 Studios in south Birmingham: green screen from £800 a day and its live studio from £995, each with cameras, a lighting rig and a technician. Digbeth Loc. Studios, Curzon Street Studios and FBN Studios quote by date and stage.

Which Birmingham studios have the biggest stages?

For sheer floor, FBN Studios in Redditch, just south of the city: 42 by 39 metres clear, with 18.5 metres of height. In the city, Digbeth Loc. Studios, Steven Knight’s studio in Digbeth, is where Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man was based, and Curzon Street Studios’ Studio A in Eastside is 14 by 17 metres with a 6.1-metre grid.

Where can I find a green screen or infinity cove in Birmingham?

Curzon Street Studios’ Studio B has a large fixed green screen with a three-wall infinity cove. Birmingham Film Studio in Hockley has a 15 by 6 metre green screen and a white cyc on request, and B30 Studios in south Birmingham hires its studio as a green screen package from £800 a day (checked October 2026).

Where was Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man based?

At Digbeth Loc. Studios on Montague Street, Digbeth, founded by Steven Knight and managed by BBC Studioworks, which takes the bookings. The film also shot on location across the city, Gas Street Basin included.

Can we hire the BBC’s Tea Factory?

No. The Tea Factory on Bordesley Street is the BBC’s new home in Digbeth, due to open in 2027, for The Archers, Asian Network, Newsbeat, 1Xtra, Radio WM and Midlands Today. It isn’t a hire stage.

Can you book the studio for us?

Yes, on the same quote as the crew. We check what’s free for your dates, and on a crew hire the studio goes on at the same 10% booking fee and 2% insurance as everything else we book. Our team reads every brief within 2 working hours.

Can you build a set for a Birmingham shoot?

Yes, through us: an art director designs it, set builders make it in a workshop or on site, and the same team strikes it. Birmingham’s scenic workshops include Seedbed Studio in Aston, and builders travel in from London, Manchester or Bristol when the build needs them.

Does a set need planning permission in Birmingham?

Only if it stays up a while. Production Central WM’s code of practice gives the example of a temporary set standing for more than 21 days from construction to removal. Every set is built to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, and scaffolding or lighting towers on the street go to the film office at least seven days ahead.

Studio or location for an interview?

For one or two people in Birmingham, often a location: the client’s own floor off Colmore Row, or a converted works in Digbeth, gives the film a sense of place a green screen can’t. A blackout studio wins for product, music videos and anything you’ll key later.
