The role

What an editor does on your film

An editor watches every minute of the rushes, finds the film in them and builds the cut, then takes it through rounds of notes to picture lock. After that, the online, the grade, the mix and the deliverables finish it: one editor on a small job, a specialist for each on a bigger one.

Most of our edits run remotely, so the edit isn’t tied to Bristol: it happens wherever the editor and a fast connection are. What happens in Bristol is the shoot and the hand-off, which is where a good edit starts.

On set, a DIT or camera assistant copies and checks every card; for a quick turnaround, proxies go up from the location so the cut starts the same day. The city has the facilities for the rest: Films at 59’s head office on Cotham Hill runs offline suites, Baselight grading, a DI suite and sound post, and its base at The Bottle Yard handles ingest and media management (checked October 2026). If you want the editor in the room, we book one to work from your office in Bristol or Bath. As a crew agency with 2,800+ freelance crew on our books, 150+ of them in and around Bristol and Bath, we scale a post team up as the job needs it: an assistant editor for the ingest, a colourist, a social editor for the cutdowns.

  • The structure found. Hours of interviews and B-roll watched, logged and built into a beginning, a middle and an end.
  • Notes turned round. Two rounds of amends as standard, each back fast, with comments on the timecode.
  • Every screen covered. Masters, cutdowns, subtitles and the right ratio for every platform.
  • Your software, or ours. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid or Final Cut, in your office or remote.

Rather we ran the edit? Our post-production team cuts from £550 a day, with the suite and two rounds of amends, and grades from £600 a day. How our crew rates work: crew rates in Bristol.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book an editor to cut for your own team, or have us make the whole Bristol film, from the shoot to the masters.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
  • Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
  • Send the full price before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day
  • Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its permission and its public liability
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
  • Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
  • One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day in the edit, rushes to first cut

Day one on a two-minute film from a conference day at Bristol Beacon: a keynote, three interviews and the room. Times are an example.

  • 09:00 Rushes in The drive back from the Beacon with the crew, or the proxies already up overnight over the venue’s connection. Copied, checked against the card count, and backed up.
  • 10:00 Watch it all Synced to the sound, organised by camera and interview, and the best lines of the keynote marked by timecode in a selects sequence.
  • 12:30 Lunch An hour away from the screen.
  • 13:30 The radio edit The interviews cut for sense first, as if for radio: a beginning, a middle and an end, in the speakers’ own words.
  • 15:30 Pictures The stage, the room and the audience laid over the voices, and the pace set with music.
  • 17:00 First cut Exported with burnt-in timecode and sent on a review link, so the client can send notes against the timecode that evening.
  • 17:30 Wrap Project saved and backed up twice. Tomorrow: the notes, then the cutdowns for social.

Want to watch the cut together? Watershed’s Cinema 1 seats 197 and takes cast and crew screenings every day (checked October 2026).

Which kind

Which editor do you need?

An edit runs in stages, and a bigger film has a specialist for each.

Offline editor The creative cut From £350 a day

Builds the structure and the cut, and takes it through notes to picture lock.

Best for brand films, documentaries, customer stories and recruitment films.

Online editor Finishing and deliverables Quoted on the brief

Conforms the locked cut at full quality, adds titles and makes the deliverables.

Best for broadcast and anything with strict delivery specs, such as a TV ad cleared through Clearcast for ITV in the West.

Assistant editor Ingest, sync and logging Quoted on the brief

Organises the rushes, syncs the sound, logs and transcribes, so the editor can start cutting.

Best on long-form and multi-camera projects, and on a conference with several rooms filming at once.

Colourist The grade From £600 a day

Grades the film so every shot matches and the look holds.

Best for anything shot on a cinema camera. In the city, Films at 59 runs Baselight grading and a DI suite at its Cotham Hill head office (checked October 2026).

Motion designer Titles, graphics and animation Quoted on the brief

Animated titles, lower thirds, data and explainer graphics.

Best for corporate, financial and explainer films. Xanadoo’s concept film, shot at The Forge in Bristol, carries its numbers in stat-led motion graphics made by our team.

Social editor Cutdowns and versions Quoted on the brief

Turns a master into 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 cutdowns, with subtitles, for every platform.

Best after a brand film or an event, when the content needs to go out this week.

Our work · Bristol

H&M’s Bristol store reopening

An event film for the reopening of H&M’s Bristol store, which came to us through The Park, a London PR agency. We filmed the day beside the press photographer and had the edit out within a week. The reopening was a members-only party with a DJ, so the cut had to be fast and fun and still show members what was in it for them.

Crew, kit and edit · Team USA House, Paris · July to September 2024

An editor on site, through two Games

Thirty-four days in France across the Olympic and Paralympic Games, cutting every day. GMR Marketing, part of Omnicom, booked us to run the crew and kit for Xfinity’s athlete studio inside Team USA House, and our editor sat on site, so each film went out while the Games were still on. Footage went to GMR through LucidLink, with Frame.io for review, and the unit delivered ten more films than the original scope, plus TikTok cut-downs and a wrap-up film.

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much Simon. If you ever need another brand film or any thing else, we're here to help. It was a joy working with you guys.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring a video editor in Bristol: questions

How much does a video editor cost in Bristol?

Our freelance editors start at £350 a day, paid to the editor in full, plus our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance: £392 + VAT. Our rates are national, so a Bristol edit costs the same as anywhere else we crew. If you’d rather we ran the edit, our post-production team cuts from £550 a day, with the suite and two rounds of amends included, and grades from £600 a day.

What does the insurance on a crew booking cover?

Two things. Employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and insurance on the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included.

Is the editor in Bristol?

If you want one in the room, yes: we book an editor to work from your office in Bristol or Bath. We’re a crew agency with 2,800+ freelance crew on our books across the UK, 150+ of them in and around Bristol and Bath, so we can scale a crew from one person for a morning to a full unit for a week. Most of our own edits run remotely, so where the editor sits rarely changes the film. Our Bristol office is at Raw Space, 111 Gloucester Road, in Bishopston, and our headquarters is in London, at 124 City Road. Any travel is on the quote before anything is booked.

How do rushes get from a Bristol shoot to the edit?

By upload or by drive. On set, a DIT or camera assistant copies and checks the cards; for an urgent job, proxies go up from the location while you shoot, and the edit starts the same day. The drives follow by courier or come back with the crew, and from Temple Meads a drive can be in London in 1 hour 19 minutes on the fastest trains (checked October 2026). See DIT hire in Bristol.

Can you cut an event film the same week?

Yes. H&M’s Bristol store reopening, which came to us through The Park, was filmed beside the press photographer and the final film was out within a week. For a conference, an editor can sit in a side room or the production office and cut from the cards as they come off the cameras, so highlights go out that evening or the next morning; the room, the power and the upload are agreed with the venue first.

Where can we grade, mix or screen a film in Bristol?

Our own post-production team grades and mixes in-house, from £600 a day for the grade: Xanadoo’s concept film, shot at The Forge, was cut, graded and mixed by our team, motion graphics included. If you’d rather finish in the city, Films at 59’s head office on Cotham Hill has offline suites, Baselight grading, a DI suite, ADR and sound post, its Brockley Studios does foley and audio post, and Watershed’s Cinema 1, with 197 seats, takes rushes, technical and cast and crew screenings every day (checked October 2026).

Can you cut more than one film from a Bristol shoot?

Yes, and it’s the easiest way to get more out of a day’s shoot. Rise Technical Recruitment got a 90-second recruitment film and a set of employee success stories from the same shoot, without extra time or budget. Tell us every version you need before the shoot, and the plan, the questions and the edit are built around all of them from the start.

What software do your editors use?

Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro. Tell us what your project is in, and we’ll match the editor.

From £350 a day
