Film crew hire/Bristol/Studios and set builds

Film studios in Bristol. Stages, coves, green screens and set builds.

Bristol’s stages are at The Bottle Yard Studios on the city’s southern edge, the council’s own studio, where Rivals was based, The Outlaws built its sets and Sanditon went up on the back lot: 11 stages across two sites, the biggest 21,700 sq ft. For product, interviews and anything keyed later, there are coves and green screens across the city, from a black box in the hold of a Dutch barge on Welsh Back to a basement in Bedminster and a trading estate in Barton Hill, most of them priced online. Here’s who has what, what a day costs, and how a set gets built, with the crew booked by our producers.

01 Which kind of space

Stage, cove or a room with character?

For builds

Sound stage

A big, quiet box for builds: commercials with sets, drama, anything with walls that move. The Bottle Yard’s 11 stages in Whitchurch and Hengrove run from 7,000 to 21,700 sq ft, and Studio 6 is set up for multicamera work, with an optional gallery.

Long or short hire, quoted by date: The Bottle Yard publishes no day rate.

For product and interviews

Cove or green screen

A blacked-out room with an infinity cove or a green screen, for product, interviews, music videos and anything you’ll key later: Floating Harbour Studios on Welsh Back, Qu Studios in Bedminster, Factory Studios in Barton Hill, smaller coves on Gloucester Road and Meriton Street, and the 5,000 sq ft green screen in The Bottle Yard’s Studio 8.

Most publish a half-day rate. Check what’s in it before comparing.

For interviews

A room with character

Royal Fort House or Goldney Hall at the University of Bristol, the Bristol Beacon, the SS Great Britain’s dining saloon, or one of the council’s own buildings: City Hall, its museums and historic houses, A Bond warehouse and Redcliffe Caves.

Council interiors go through Bristol Film Office and are priced by negotiation (checked October 2026).

Worth asking first

For a one- or two-person interview, a studio isn’t always the answer. The client’s own office, or a room like the one we found at The Forge for Xanadoo, says something about the people in it that a green screen can’t. Our guide to filming in Bristol: locations and permits is the place to start.

02 Stages

The Bottle Yard’s stages

Eleven stages across two sites in south Bristol, at what Bristol Film Office calls the largest film and TV studio in the West of England. None of them has a published day rate.

Bristol City Council opened The Bottle Yard in 2010 in a former winery and bottling plant, and added TBY2 in 2022, with a 1MW solar roof and BAFTA albert’s “Outstanding” studio sustainability rating for 2025–26. Rivals, Down Cemetery Road, The Crow Girl and The Forsytes were based there, The Outlaws built sets on its stages, and Sanditon went up on its 60,000 sq ft back lot.

Every stage is for long or short hire, quoted by date. The studio’s own staff work Monday to Friday, so a weekend shoot needs them booked in, and paid for; charities can apply for a reduced rate. For shoots that stay on site, its production village has make-up and wardrobe rooms and 17 dressing and green rooms.

Bath Film Office’s studio list adds Patchway Studios, Real World Studios and Bath Spa University’s TV studio: ask each for its terms.

On a stage, the lighting plan sets the bill as much as the floor. The gaffer brings the kit or hires it in, with a spark or two to rig it, and Films at 59, VI Rental and Grip Services are tenants on the same site. Our guide to film equipment hire in Bristol lists who has what.

04 Our bookings

Rooms and sets we’ve booked

The first is in Bristol; the next two weren’t, and each says where it was. They’re here because the same calls come up on a Bristol shoot: a room that has to work as a set, a studio at short notice, a set dressed from nothing. The last is how the city’s own buildings are booked.

Our work · The Forge, Bristol

A room at The Forge, for Xanadoo

Xanadoo’s founders, who both came from the Eden Project, needed one film for funders and partners before there was a building. We found the location, turned a room at The Forge into an interview set for the day and led the interviews.

One room, one day: the interviews and the cutaways came from the same space.

Our work · London · Mar 2026

A studio in four days, for AlTi

AlTi Tiedemann Global needed an announcement from its Global Chief Investment Officer, Nancy Curtin, filmed within four days. We found a studio, booked a crew under NDA and filmed it on 23 March 2026, a conversation lit to look clean rather than staged.

Short notice narrows the list to studios that answer the same day and say what the day includes.

Our work · Upper East Side, New York · Sep 2026

A library dressed from empty, for Nevis × Focus

A panelled library came empty, so everything on screen was brought in, down to the chairs, for three interviews and a three-way conversation on five cameras, all in one afternoon.

A dressed room can stand in for a stage when the build is furniture, not walls.

How we book it · Bristol

Council buildings and the Dockyards

City Hall, the council’s museums and historic houses, A Bond warehouse and Redcliffe Caves, which stood in for Cornish tin mines in Poldark, are booked through Bristol Film Office, priced by negotiation. Bristol Dockyards, the SS Great Britain Trust’s site, hires the ship’s interiors, the dry dock and the Being Brunel museum, with power, running water and Wi-Fi on site and parking for about 150 cars.

Checked October 2026. A drama or feature also pays the Film Office’s £200 admin fee per production.

05 Set builds

Set builds in Bristol

A set build runs in four stages: design, construction, dressing and strike. The art director designs it, set builders and scenic painters make it, the props team dresses it, and the same people take it down and clear the stage.

Bristol’s set and scenic firms include Set Smith, which builds sets, scenery and props in its workshop at The Bottle Yard and on location, and the Bristol Old Vic’s scenic workshop, which fabricates in wood and metal for outside clients. Also at The Bottle Yard: Scaffolding to the Stars for rigging, Figure Nine for rope access, cable dollies and filming platforms, and Real SFX for special effects. Local crew first. When a shoot needs more hands, or a role Bristol is short of that week, we bring them in from across the South West, Cardiff or London, and the travel is on the quote before anything is booked.

On a stage, ask about load-in before anything is drawn. TBY2’s Studios 9 and 10 have 16 by 13 ft scenic doors and clear-span floors; at TBY1 the doors run from 15 by 11 ft on Studio 8 down to under 10 ft square on Tank House 3.

Building, fitting out and taking down a temporary set for TV or film falls under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, the HSE says. On location in Bristol, the Film Office wants a full risk assessment with the application, and rain machines, wet-downs, special effects and stunts declared (checked October 2026).

Through us, an art director is £675–878 a day and a set builder £341–512, before the 10% booking fee and 2% insurance. The rest of the art department is on our props and wardrobe guide.

06 Costs

What a studio day includes, and what costs extra

The rate

Mostly published, below the stages. Floating Harbour’s Hold is £250 a half day and £350 a day on weekdays, Qu Studios starts at £275 a half day, Factory Studios’ Room 10 at £550 a day, Tiny Studio is £250 a day and Alleyway £180 for eight hours (checked October 2026). The Bottle Yard and Farm Studio quote on request.

What’s in the day

Ask before comparing. Factory Studios includes a green room and a styling suite; Floating Harbour’s Hold comes with its lighting rig, staff on hand for technical questions and 40% off its kit; Qu’s green screen cove is pre-lit.

Weekends

Floating Harbour charges £500 for a weekend day, full days only. The Bottle Yard’s staff work weekdays, so weekend attendance is arranged in advance and paid for.

Set-up and strike

Usually extra, and on a build they can be most of the booking: a room set can need days on the stage before anyone shoots. Ask for build and strike days priced on their own.

Parking and load-in

The Bottle Yard lists 210 secure spaces at TBY1 and 160 at TBY2, with unit base parking. Floating Harbour has limited short-term parking for visitors, so call ahead; it’s an easy walk from Temple Meads.

The Clean Air Zone

Bristol’s Clean Air Zone is Class D, so it charges cars as well as vans: £9 a day for a car or van below Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol, £100 for an HGV or coach, around the clock. Bath’s zone is Class C and doesn’t charge private cars (checked October 2026). Bristol’s zone covers 1.18 square miles in the centre of the city, so it’s the studio’s address that decides, and we check every van against it before it’s booked. More in our guide to shoot logistics in Bristol.

Power

Check it against the lighting plan. At The Bottle Yard, the TBY2 stages, Tank House 4 and Studio 6 have 400A three-phase supplies; Studio 8 has two 125A three-phase supplies and a 32A single-phase.

Insurance

Every studio wants a public liability certificate. On a crew hire it’s yours, as producer of record; on a full production it’s ours, naming the studio. Filming on council land, Bristol Film Office asks for at least £5m.

07 Questions

Film studios in Bristol: questions

How much does it cost to hire a film studio in Bristol?

For a cove or green screen, most Bristol studios publish a rate. On their own sites in October 2026: Floating Harbour Studios’ Hold on Welsh Back is £250 a half day and £350 a day on weekdays, Qu Studios in Bedminster starts at £275 a half day, Factory Studios’ Room 10 in Barton Hill at £550 + VAT a day, and Tiny Studio is £250 a day. The Bottle Yard’s stages are quoted by date.

What’s the biggest film studio in Bristol?

The Bottle Yard Studios, the largest film and TV studio in the West of England by Bristol Film Office’s account: 11 stages across two sites in Whitchurch and Hengrove. The biggest floor is Tank House 4 at 21,700 sq ft, the tallest Tank House 3 at 65 ft, and TBY2’s Studio 9 is a soundproofed, clear-span 20,000 sq ft with 34 ft to the truss.

Where can I find a green screen or infinity cove in Bristol?

The Bottle Yard’s Studio 8 has a 5,000 sq ft green screen with an infinity cove and green floor. Smaller: Qu Studios’ pre-lit green screen cove and white infinity cove in Bedminster, Factory Studios’ Room 10 in Barton Hill, the Hold on Floating Harbour’s barge, Farm Studio at Failand with a paintable 28 by 14 ft cove, and small coves at Alleyway Studios on Gloucester Road and Tiny Studio on Meriton Street.

Can a commercial or a corporate shoot book The Bottle Yard?

Yes. All 11 stages are offered for long and short term hire, and Studio 6 is set up for multicamera work with an optional gallery. The studio’s staff work Monday to Friday, so weekend attendance is arranged and paid for, and charities can apply for a reduced rate.

What has been filmed at The Bottle Yard?

Its own brochure lists Down Cemetery Road, Boarders, The Crow Girl, Rivals, The Forsytes and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, with Sanditon built on the back lot. Poldark used it as a studio base and The Outlaws built sets there.

Can you book the studio for us?

Yes, on the same quote as the crew. We check what’s free for your dates, and on a crew hire the studio goes on at the same 10% booking fee and 2% insurance as everything else we book. Our team reads every brief within 2 working hours.

Can you build a set for a Bristol shoot?

Yes, through us: an art director designs it, set builders make it in a workshop or on site, and the same team strikes it. Bristol’s scenic firms include Set Smith at The Bottle Yard and the Bristol Old Vic’s scenic workshop, and builders come in from Cardiff or London when the build needs more hands.

Studio or location for an interview?

For one or two people in Bristol, often a location: the client’s own office, or a room like the one we found at The Forge, gives the film a sense of place a green screen can’t. Floating Harbour’s Bridge room on Welsh Back puts an interviewee in front of the harbour, away from the noise further into the centre. A cove wins for product, music videos and anything you’ll key later.
