The role
What an editor does on your film
An editor turns the rushes into the film, whether they came off a 35mm camera on a clifftop or a day of interviews in a Truro office. They watch everything, log it, find the story, build the cut and take it through notes to picture lock. The grade, the mix and the deliverables finish it, by the same editor on a small job or by specialists on a bigger one.
Our post-production team is in London, not Cornwall. Rushes from a Cornish shoot come to our London edit, where we cut, grade and mix in DaVinci Resolve, or to a freelance editor working remotely. If you want an editor in the room with you in Cornwall, one travels down, with the travel and a hotel on the quote before anything is booked.
What happens in Cornwall is the shoot side, which is where a good edit starts. On set, a DIT or camera assistant copies and checks every card, and the drives travel with the crew. Don’t count on uploading from the location: on our Cohere shoot on the Lizard there was no phone signal on the clifftops, and the unit ran on twelve radios along a mile of cliff path.
We’re a crew agency with 2,800+ freelance crew on our books across the UK, 30+ of them in Cornwall, and we scale post up as the film needs: one editor for a customer story, or an editor, an assistant, a colourist and a mixer for a campaign shot along the coast.
- The story found. Hours of interviews and B-roll watched, logged and built into a structure.
- Notes handled. Two rounds of amends as standard, each turned round fast, on a review link you can watch from anywhere, Penzance included.
- Ready for every screen. Masters, cutdowns, subtitles and the right ratio for every platform, and Clearcast for a TV ad.
- Your software, or ours. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid or Final Cut, remote or in the room.

Two ways to book
Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?
One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book an editor to cut for your own team, or have us make the whole Cornish film, from the shoot to the masters.
Crew hire
You run the shoot.
10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.
We do
- Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
- Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
- Send the full price before anything is booked
- One person to call all day
- Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in
You do
- Run the shoot, or your producer does
- The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
- The location, its permission and its public liability
- Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record
What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.
Full production
We’re the producer of record.
15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.
We do
- Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
- Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
- Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
- One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company
You do
- The creative calls
- Signing off the plan and the budget
What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.
Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.
On the day
A day in the edit, Cornish rushes to first cut
Day one on a two-minute brand film from a day’s shoot on the coast near Newquay, cut in our London edit. Times are an example.
- Overnight Drives up The drives travel with a crew member, by car or on the Night Riviera sleeper from Penzance, which gets into Paddington soon after five the next morning.
- 09:00 Rushes in Copied, checked against the card count from the shoot, and backed up before anyone starts cutting.
- 10:00 Watch it all Synced to the sound and organised by scene, with the best lines marked by timecode. Wind on the mics is flagged early, so the mix knows what’s coming.
- 12:30 Lunch An hour away from the screen.
- 13:30 The radio edit The interviews cut for story first, as if for radio: beginning, middle and end, in the contributors’ own words.
- 15:30 Pictures The coast, the harbour and the rest of the B-roll laid over the interviews, and the pace set with music.
- 17:00 First cut Exported with burnt-in timecode and sent on a review link, so you can watch it that evening and send notes on the timecode.
- 17:30 Wrap Project saved and backed up. Tomorrow: the notes.
Which kind
Which editor do you need?
The edit has several stages, and on bigger films a specialist for each.
Offline editor the story and the cut From £350 a day
Builds the story and the cut, and takes it through notes to picture lock.
Best for brand films, documentaries and customer stories, from a maker in Penryn to a festival in Falmouth.
Online editor finishing and delivery
Conforms the locked cut at full quality, adds titles and makes the deliverables.
Best for broadcast and anything with strict delivery specs, such as a TV ad cleared through Clearcast, as Whistlefish’s was.
Assistant editor rushes, sync and logs
Organises the rushes, syncs the sound, logs and transcribes, so the editor can start cutting.
Best on long-form, multi-camera and multi-day projects, like a documentary filmed across a year on Bodmin Moor.
Colourist the grade
Grades the film so every shot matches and the look is right.
Best for anything shot on a cinema camera or on film, and for Cornish light that goes from fog to sun in an afternoon.
Motion graphics titles and graphics
Animated titles, lower thirds, maps and explainer graphics.
Best for corporate, charity and explainer films, where the numbers have to be on screen.
Social editor cutdowns
Turns a master into 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 cutdowns, with subtitles, for every platform.
Best after an advert, an event or a summer season, when the content needs to go out this week.
What it’s for
What people book an editor for in Cornwall
Agency and in-house overflow
An extra editor, remote or at your desk in Truro, Falmouth or Newquay, for a busy fortnight.
Festival and event highlights
A festival day in Falmouth or an event at the Eden Project cut the same night, for the inboxes the morning after.
Tourism and hospitality
Hotels, attractions and holiday brands with a summer of footage to cut into the next season’s campaign.
Conservation and charities
Documentaries and appeal films about the moors and the coast, cut to a funder’s deadline.
Visiting productions
A team from London or abroad shoots in Cornwall and wants a first cut by the time it’s home: Paddington is 4 hours 21 minutes from Truro on the fastest trains (checked October 2026).
Recent work
Editors on our jobs
One Cornish advert cut in-house, and an editor we put on site abroad.
Our work · Talland Bay and Lostwithiel, Cornwall · August 2025
Whistlefish’s first TV ad
Whistlefish’s first TV ad, shot over two days in one house and on the coast at Talland Bay, Hessenford and Lostwithiel. Our own team cut, mixed and graded it in-house, took the scripts, supers and substantiation through Clearcast, and delivered the masters through Peach to ITV in the West, with Sky AdSmart alongside and cutdowns for digital.
Crew, kit and edit · Team USA House, Paris · July to September 2024
An editor on site through two Games
For GMR Marketing, part of Omnicom, we ran the crew and kit for Xfinity’s athlete studio inside Team USA House: 34 days in France across the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our editor cut on site every day, with footage to GMR through LucidLink and Frame.io for review, and the unit turned out ten more films than the original scope, plus TikTok cutdowns and a wrap-up film.
Before you book
Things to know
The day
- A full edit day, remotely or in your office.
- Overtime agreed with you before it happens.
- In the room in Cornwall? The editor’s travel and hotel are on the quote.
From the Cornish shoot
- Cards copied and checked on set by a DIT or camera assistant, with a second copy before any card is wiped.
- Drives travel with the crew, by car or on the sleeper, or by courier, at cost.
- No signal on the clifftop? Plan on the drives, not the upload.
Shooting in Cornwall
- On the shoot side: Cornwall Council asks for £5m public liability and a location-specific risk assessment with every application.
- Connections vary: in January 2023 Cornwall Council put gigabit-capable full fibre at 49% of Cornwall, so on a rural location the rushes travel on the drives.
Working remotely
- Rushes sent by drive or secure transfer, with proxies for speed.
- Cuts shared on a review link, with notes on the timecode.
- Falmouth University’s School of Film & Television hires out a colour grading suite at £750 a day and a 25-seat dubbing theatre with an Avid S6 at £900 a day, plus VAT, room only, with no technician (checked October 2026).

Questions
Hiring a video editor in Cornwall: questions
How much does a video editor cost in Cornwall?
Our freelance editors start at £350 a day, paid to the editor in full, plus our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance: £392 + VAT. Our rates are national, so Cornwall costs the same as anywhere else we crew. If you’d rather we ran the edit, our post-production team cuts from £550 a day, with the suite and two rounds of amends included.
What does the insurance on a crew booking cover?
Two things. Employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and insurance on the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included.
Is the editor in Cornwall?
Usually not, and it rarely matters. Our post-production team is in London, at our headquarters on City Road, and our freelance editors mostly cut remotely. Our founders work from our Newquay office, so the shoot side is close to home. If you want an editor in the room in Cornwall, one travels down, with the travel and a hotel on the quote before anything is booked.
How do rushes get from a Cornish shoot to the edit?
On the drives, mostly. On set, a DIT or camera assistant copies and checks the cards, and the drives travel with the crew or by courier. Uploading from the location is a bonus, not a plan: on our Cohere shoot on the Lizard there was no phone signal on the clifftops, and in January 2023 Cornwall Council put gigabit-capable full fibre at 49% of Cornwall. London Paddington to Truro takes 4 hours 21 minutes on the fastest trains, and to Penzance 5 hours 4; the Night Riviera sleeper runs six nights a week, Paddington to Penzance (checked October 2026). See DIT hire in Cornwall.
Can we edit or grade in Cornwall?
Yes. An editor can cut from a hotel room or your office with a laptop and a drive. For a proper room, Falmouth University’s School of Film & Television hires out a colour grading suite at £750 a day and a 25-seat dubbing theatre with an Avid S6 at £900 a day, plus VAT, room only, with no technician (checked October 2026).
Can you cut a TV ad from a Cornish shoot?
Yes. Whistlefish’s first TV ad was shot at Talland Bay, Hessenford and Lostwithiel; our team cut, mixed and graded it in-house, took the scripts, supers and substantiation through Clearcast, and delivered through Peach to ITV in the West, with Sky AdSmart alongside and cutdowns for digital.
Do you work with film negative from a Cornish shoot?
Yes. Cohere’s AI for Empowerment was shot on 35mm in four countries, with its Cornish leg on the Lizard. The negative went to Cinelab in Slough for processing and a 4K scan, the grade was at Harbor in Farringdon, and every stage of post-production ran through our London team. See what we learned shooting it on 35mm.
