Film crew hire/London/Gimbal operator

Hire a gimbal operator in London. Moving shots that fit on a London pavement.

Gimbal operators for walk-and-talks, events, sport, and brand films across London, booked from our office on City Road, by Old Street. They build the camera on a stabiliser, balance it, and fly it: on foot along a Southwark pavement, on a car mount, or down a corridor in a City tower. From £529 a day, paid to the operator in full.

The role

What a gimbal operator does on your shoot

A gimbal operator runs a camera on a motorised stabiliser, such as a DJI Ronin 2 or RS 4 Pro, that keeps the picture level and smooth while they move. It’s the quickest way to a moving shot: walking interviews, tracking people through a building, or following the action at an event.

Balance is most of the job. A camera that isn’t balanced fights the motors and drifts, so a good operator rebuilds and rebalances every time the lens or the rig changes.

In London a gimbal can keep a shoot inside the boroughs’ small-crew rules, where a dolly and track can’t. Whether a gimbal counts as handheld is the borough’s call, so we ask before the day.

  • Moving shots, fast. Built, balanced, and rolling in minutes, not the half-hour a dolly needs.
  • Walk-and-talks that hold. Walking backwards ahead of two people, framing them steady all the way down the street.
  • Into tight spaces. Through doors and up stairs, into lifts, cabs, and kitchens.
  • Ready for remote focus. Wireless focus and video, so a focus puller or director can watch.

How our rates work, and the two ways to book: crew rates in London.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book a gimbal operator for your own London shoot, or have us take the production on, the route and its permissions included.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
  • Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
  • Send the full price before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day
  • Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its permission and its public liability
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
  • Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
  • One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day with a gimbal operator, call to wrap

An interview series for a brand in Southwark: walking interviews on the pavement, then the office and its roof terrace over the river. Times are an example; the call sheet sets the real ones.

  • 08:00 Build and balance Camera on the gimbal, lens chosen, balanced on all three axes, motors tuned.
  • 08:45 Walk the route The pavement walked with the producer: where the talent starts, where the conversation turns, and where 1.5m stays clear for people passing.
  • 09:30 Walking interview Backwards ahead of the talent, a runner spotting the ground behind and the people coming the other way. Five on the pavement, no more.
  • 11:00 Inside Through the lobby, into the lift and along the office floor, rebalanced for a wider lens.
  • 13:00 Lunch Batteries changed, cards to the producer.
  • 14:00 Details and B-roll Slow push-ins and reveals on the roof terrace, the river behind.
  • 17:30 Wrap Cards to the DIT or producer, and the kit packed for the tube: only what the crew can carry, nothing over 2m.

Which rig

Which gimbal set-up do you need?

The camera decides the gimbal, and in London the gimbal can decide whether you need a permit.

Handheld gimbal DJI RS 4 Pro or similar From £529 a day + kit

Carries a Sony FX3, FX6, or a mirrorless camera. One person, fast, light, and small enough for a five-person crew on a pavement.

Best for walk-and-talks, events, social content, and B-roll.

Large gimbal DJI Ronin 2 or Movi Pro From £529 a day + kit

Carries a cinema camera with cine lenses, often on an Easyrig or a support vest for long days, with wireless focus.

Best for brand films and adverts with heavier cameras, on a stage or a location you control.

Vehicle and car mounts On a car, a quad, or a bike Quoted on the brief

The gimbal on a car mount or a tracking vehicle, operated by remote and built with a grip. Filming on the move in London means telling the Met Police Film Unit first.

Best for driving shots and fast action.

Ronin 4D Camera and stabiliser in one Quoted on the brief

A full-frame camera with built-in stabilisation and autofocus. One operator, documentary speed. VMI in Acton lists it, and we’ve hired one from FOMO Rentals in E2.

Best for run-and-gun days that still need to glide.

Steadicam Heavier cameras, longer takes From £950 a day

For a full-size cinema camera and long, complex moves. See Steadicam operators in London.

Best for adverts, drama, and one-shot sequences.

Recent work

Gimbals on our jobs, and on London’s pavements

Full production · Marylebone, London · May 2025

A Ronin 4D round Marylebone

A brand film for a property development, shot around Marylebone by a crew of three: our director, a cinematographer, and an assistant, on small cine cameras and lenses, with no big rigs. We hired a DJI Ronin 4D from FOMO Rentals in east London the evening before, with a lens adapter and two 1TB SSDs. A restaurant on the route gave written permission to film inside, for web, social, and limited paid use, with no TV or outdoor advertising.

How we crew it · London

A walk-and-talk on a London pavement

Five people or fewer, the kit carried, the pavement kept clear: in the FilmFixer boroughs, Camden, Islington, and Southwark among them, that’s generally filming without a permit. Private estates set their own rules. Battersea Power Station wants a permit for any gimbal, and Canary Wharf a method statement and a risk assessment for anything beyond a camera on a tripod. We check the route against them when we plan the day.

Before you book

Things to know

The day

  • 11 hours, including an hour for lunch.
  • Overtime at card rates, agreed with you before it happens.
  • Half days on request.

Kit and the tube

  • Their own gimbal, or one hired in, at a day rate on its own line.
  • Tell us the camera and lenses when you book, so the gimbal can carry them.
  • By tube: only what the crew can carry, nothing over 2m. Filming on the network needs TfL’s permission.

Paying and changes

  • Nothing to pay until you confirm the operator.
  • 50% by card when you book, 50% on receipt of the final rushes.
  • Every line on the quote: day rate, booking fee, kit, travel.
  • Cancellation terms are on every quote.

What our insurance covers

  • Employers’ liability for the operator we book: £10m.
  • Kit we hire in for you is insured. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.
  • Nothing else on a crew hire. Public liability, the location and your own kit stay with you, and your venue will want your certificate. When we’re the producer of record, our policy covers the shoot.
  • In London, councils and the Royal Parks ask for £5m public liability, TfL and Canary Wharf £10m, and Network Rail up to £10m (checked October 2026).

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring a gimbal operator in London: questions

How much does a gimbal operator cost in London?

Our gimbal operators are £529–656 for an 11-hour day, paid to the operator in full: the APA/Bectu camera operator range, as there’s no separate card rate. On top go our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, so a day starts at £592.48 + VAT. The gimbal kit goes on its own line.

What does the insurance on a crew booking cover?

Two things. Employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and insurance on the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included.

Do we need a permit for a gimbal walk-and-talk on a London street?

Often not, if the crew is small. Five people or fewer with handheld kit or a tripod, leaving 1.5m of pavement clear, can generally film without one in the FilmFixer boroughs; in Westminster it’s handheld only, with 2m clear. The City of London expects an application even for a small crew: £95 + VAT for five or fewer, handheld (checked October 2026). Private land needs the owner’s say-so, and the Royal Parks need asking for any commercial filming. Our guide to the boroughs has the detail.

Gimbal or Steadicam?

A gimbal is quicker, lighter, and cheaper: right for most corporate, event, and social work, especially on a crowded pavement. Steadicam carries a heavier cinema camera and holds long, complex takes better.

Can a gimbal shot be filmed from a car in London?

Yes, with a car mount or a tracking vehicle and a remote operator, built by a grip. Tell the Met Police Film Unit about any filming on the move. TfL’s red routes need permission whatever the crew size, currently with seven weeks’ notice as a temporary measure (checked October 2026).

Can you film with a gimbal on the tube?

With TfL’s permission, applied for at least three weeks ahead. On trains in service TfL allows limited crew and lightweight handheld kit only, and a crew of 1–10 pays £900 an hour, plus VAT and staff costs (checked October 2026). See our guide to filming on TfL.

Can a gimbal operator use our camera?

Yes, if the gimbal can carry it. Tell us the camera body, lens, and any accessories when you book, and we’ll match the rig to the weight. If the camera’s coming from a London kit house, tell us which one.
