Drone operators for brand films, property, events, and documentaries across London, booked from our office on City Road. They plan the flight and fly to the CAA’s 2026 rules, with NATS clearance where London’s airspace is restricted: over the City, Hyde Park, and the Isle of Dogs. The role

What a drone operator does on your shoot

A drone operator plans and flies the aerial shots: the reveal over the river, the building from above. In London most of the work comes before the day: checking the airspace, applying for clearance where it’s restricted, and getting the landowner’s permission for take-off and landing.

London has no city-wide drone ban. It does have three restricted areas in the middle of it, flight restriction zones round Heathrow and RAF Northolt, and estates that ban drones outright, so the operator checks which apply before quoting.

  • Airspace cleared. NATS clearance for the City, Hyde Park, and the Isle of Dogs, asked for at least 21 days ahead.
  • Flown to CAA rules. A Flyer ID, an Operator ID, Remote ID on, and an Operational Authorisation where the flight needs one.
  • A site assessed. Take-off and landing, people, roads, the river, and a plan B.
  • Shots that cut in. Matched frame rate and colour profile to the ground cameras.

What’s included

What the day rate covers

In the day rate

  • A day’s flying, with their own drone, batteries, and spares
  • Flight planning, the site assessment, and the airspace check
  • Their CAA registrations and any Operational Authorisation
  • Their aviation insurance, checked before we book them
  • The rushes at wrap, matched to the ground cameras

On top, each on its own line

  • Our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, on the whole quote
  • Restricted-airspace applications, quoted on the brief
  • Borough, estate, and Royal Parks drone fees, where they charge
  • A second operator for the camera, on a bigger aerial shoot
  • A spotter, where the site needs one
  • Travel outside Greater London, at cost

How our rates work, and the two ways to book: crew rates in London.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book a drone operator for your own London shoot, or have us take the production on, the landowner and borough permissions included.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
  • Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
  • Send the full price before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day
  • Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its permission and its public liability
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
  • Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
  • One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day with a drone operator, call to wrap

Aerials of an office building on the river in the City of London, inside the City’s restricted area. Times are an example; the call sheet sets the real ones.

  • D–21 Airspace and landowner The Enhanced Non-Standard Flight application to NATS, at least 21 days ahead, and the landlord’s consent for take-off and landing. In the Square Mile the police side is the City of London Police.
  • D–3 The river Flights over the Thames notified to the Port of London Authority, at least three working days ahead.
  • 07:00 Site walk Take-off and landing points, people, roads, and the river checked. The area cordoned where needed.
  • 07:30 Weather and airspace Wind, rain, and any temporary restriction checked: one for a royal event or a flypast cancels clearances inside it. London VTS told 30 minutes before the first flight over the river.
  • 08:00 First flights Low-sun reveals of the building and the river, while the light is soft.
  • 15:00 Last flights and wrap Pick-ups in the afternoon light, VTS told the flying’s finished, and the flight log written up.

Which kind

Which drone do you need?

The drone is decided by the shot, the camera and, in London, by where you’re flying.

Standard aerials DJI Mavic 3 Pro or Air 3 From £750 a day

Small, quick, and quiet, with good 4K or 5K cameras. The weight and the class mark decide how close to people it can fly, which matters in a busy city.

Best for property, events, establishing shots, and social content.

Cinema drone DJI Inspire 3, full-frame Quoted on the brief

A full-frame camera with interchangeable lenses and RAW recording, often with a second operator on the camera.

Best for brand films, adverts, and anything graded with the main camera.

FPV Fast, close, and through gaps Quoted on the brief

Small, fast drones flown in first person: through doorways, along a track, or close to a moving car or a person.

Best for sport, venues, and action. Usually needs more permission and a closed set.

Inside the restricted areas The City, Hyde Park, the Isle of Dogs Plus 21 days’ notice

Below 1,400ft above sea level, all three need NATS clearance at least 21 days ahead; Westminster’s guidance puts most of the borough inside the Hyde Park area. See drones and permits in London.

Plan for it anywhere in the West End, the Square Mile, or the Isle of Dogs.

How we crew it · London

Inside the restricted areas

The City, Hyde Park, and the Isle of Dogs sit under restricted areas: a drone there needs an Enhanced Non-Standard Flight clearance from air traffic control, through NATS, at least 21 days ahead, and NATS warns London can take longer. The landowner has to agree to take-off and landing, and the police side goes to the Met, or the City of London Police in the Square Mile. We book the operator once the dates allow for all three.

Canary Wharf’s towers at dusk, One Canada Square at the centre

How we crew it · London

Where you can’t fly at all

Some London places say no outright. Canary Wharf won’t allow drones for filming under any circumstances, and Battersea Power Station prohibits them. The Royal Parks ban drones unless they’ve given written permission, which takes a CAA licence, a risk assessment, a flight plan, and at least 10 working days. When the shot needs one of these from the air, we look for another way to it: a long lens from a neighbouring roof, or a take-off point whose owner says yes.

Before you book

Things to know

Permission in London

  • Near Heathrow: the airport’s drone permit through NATS, at least 14 days ahead. RAF Northolt asks 21 working days, per flight.
  • Every site: the landowner, borough, or estate. The FilmFixer boroughs want seven working days’ notice for a drone, Kensington and Chelsea 14.

The day

  • Wind and rain can ground a drone: a weather day is agreed on the quote.
  • A royal event or a flypast brings temporary restrictions that cancel clearances, so the operator checks on the morning.

Paying and changes

  • Nothing to pay until you confirm the operator.
  • 50% by card when you book, 50% on receipt of the final rushes.
  • Every line on the quote: day rate, booking fee, kit, travel.
  • Cancellation terms are on every quote.

What our insurance covers

  • Employers’ liability for the operator we book: £10m.
  • Kit we hire in for you is insured. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.
  • Nothing else on a crew hire. Public liability, the location and your own kit stay with you, and your venue will want your certificate. When we’re the producer of record, our policy covers the shoot.
  • The drone and its flights: the operator’s own aviation insurance, checked before we book them.
  • Film London expects £5m public liability for drone filming; the FilmFixer boroughs ask £10m (checked October 2026).

From £750 a day

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring a drone operator in London: questions

How much does a drone operator cost in London?

Our drone operators start at £750 a day with their own drone. On top go our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, so a day comes to £840 + VAT, before airspace applications and landowner or borough fees. Cinema drones and FPV are quoted on the brief. There’s no APA/Bectu card rate for drone work.

What does the insurance on a crew booking cover?

Two things. Employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and insurance on the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

Yes, with planning. The City, the Hyde Park area (most of Westminster), and the Isle of Dogs are restricted areas: a drone needs an Enhanced Non-Standard Flight clearance through NATS, applied for at least 21 days ahead. The landowner has to agree to take-off and landing, and in the FilmFixer boroughs a permit is needed to take off or land on, or within 30m of, public land. Our guide to drones and permits in London has the detail.

What do drone operators need from the CAA in 2026?

Since 1 January 2026: a Flyer ID for any drone of 100g or more, and an Operator ID from 250g, or 100g with a camera. New drones carry a UK class mark, and UK1 to UK3 drones fly with Remote ID on. The Open category caps height at 120m and needs no Operational Authorisation; riskier flights need one from the CAA. We check every operator’s paperwork before we book them.

Can you fly a drone in the Royal Parks?

Only with the Royal Parks’ written permission: a CAA licence, a risk assessment, a flight plan, and the drone’s specifications, at least 10 working days ahead, with a drone fee on top of the filming fee. The central parks, Hyde Park and Regent’s Park among them, are in restricted airspace, so NATS approves the flight too. See filming in the Royal Parks.

Can you fly a drone over the Thames?

Yes, with notice: the Port of London Authority wants flights over the tidal Thames notified at least three working days ahead, and its permission to take off from a boat or the foreshore. A drone over 250g tells London VTS 30 minutes before it flies and when it’s done, keeps 50m from vessels, and never flies over or under a bridge. See filming on the Thames.
