The role

What a camera operator does on your shoot

A camera operator runs the camera: framing, moving and keeping the shot in focus, to the plan of the DOP or the director. On a small shoot they often light the interview too. On a bigger one they operate one camera of several, while the DOP watches the look.

Many operators bring their own camera kit, so one booking can cover the camera as well, on its own line of the quote. For a three-camera day at the ICC or the NEC we crew Birmingham operators where we can, and bring the rest in from Manchester, London or Bristol where the date needs it, with the travel on the quote before anything is booked.

  • Framed to the plan. Wides, singles and close-ups that cut together, on the tripod, the shoulder or a gimbal.
  • Focus that holds. On a moving speaker, a walking interview or a long lens across a conference hall.
  • Kit that turns up ready. Their own camera, cards and batteries, checked the night before.
  • Multi-camera, matched. Two or three operators on the same settings, so the edit doesn’t have to fix it.

What’s included

What the day rate covers

In the day rate

  • An 11-hour day, including an hour for lunch
  • Operating one camera, to the DOP’s or director’s plan
  • Framing, focus and exposure on every take
  • Setting up and striking their camera position
  • Matching settings across cameras on a multi-camera day
  • A card and battery check at wrap

On top, each on its own line

  • Our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, on the whole quote
  • Their camera kit, at a day rate on its own line
  • A camera assistant or DIT, if the day needs one
  • Travel from outside Birmingham, and mileage, parking and the Clean Air Zone charge where the day needs them, at cost

How our rates work, and the two ways to book: crew rates in Birmingham.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book operators for your own shoot, or have us take the production on.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
  • Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
  • Send the full price before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day
  • Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its permission and its public liability
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
  • Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
  • One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day with a camera operator, call to wrap

A conference at the ICC on Centenary Square: a keynote and a panel on three cameras. Times are an example; the call sheet sets the real ones.

  • 06:30 Get-in Kit in at the slot the event team booked. Birmingham’s big venues don’t publish filming rules, so the get-in, the power and the camera positions were agreed with them in advance.
  • 07:30 Camera positions A locked-off wide from the back of the hall, one camera on the lectern, one roaming for the panel and the room.
  • 08:15 Line-up Cameras matched for white balance, frame rate and picture profile. Timecode jammed so the edit can sync.
  • 09:00 Keynote The wide holds the stage, the tight holds the speaker, and the roaming camera picks up the audience.
  • 10:30 Changeover Cards swapped and backed up, batteries changed, chairs on stage for the panel.
  • 11:00 Panel One operator on the host, one following whoever is speaking, the wide on everything.
  • 13:00 Wrap Kit out the way it came, cards checked and copied, drives handed over.

Which kind

Which camera operator do you need?

The same job, set up five different ways. What you’re filming decides which.

Operator with kit One person, one camera kit From £529 a day + kit

Their own Sony FX6 or FX9, lenses, tripod, a slider and a small LED kit, priced on its own line.

Best for interviews, testimonials and one-camera event coverage.

Multi-camera team Two or three cameras, matched Per operator

Two or three operators on matched cameras and timecode, so panels and stage talks cut cleanly.

Best for conferences at the ICC and the NEC, and panels in the offices round Colmore Row.

Lighting camera operator Lights and shoots From £529 a day

Lights the interview and operates, with no DOP on the crew. Fine for simple, well-planned talking heads.

For a designed look, book a DOP in Birmingham instead.

Handheld and documentary Shoulder rig, observational From £529 a day

Follows real people doing real work, without stopping them. A light camera on the shoulder and a zoom.

Best for branded documentaries. At New Street, Network Rail takes corporate filming on weekdays between 10:00 and 16:00 or after 20:00 (checked October 2026).

Gimbal and Steadicam Moving shots See their own pages

Walk-and-talks, tracking shots and moving B-roll need a stabilised rig and someone who flies it every week. See gimbal operators and Steadicam operators in Birmingham.

Best for sport, events and brand films with movement.

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring a camera operator in Birmingham: questions

How much does a camera operator cost in Birmingham?

Our camera operators are £529–656 for an 11-hour day, including an hour for lunch, paid to the operator in full; the APA/Bectu card sets £529–656. On top go our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, so a day starts at £592.48 + VAT, before travel from outside Birmingham. Their own camera kit goes on the same quote at a day rate.

What does the insurance on a crew booking cover?

Two things. Employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and insurance on the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included.

Do your camera operators bring their own kit?

Many do: a Sony FX6 or FX9 with lenses, a tripod and often a small LED kit, on its own line at a day rate. Anything else we hire in at the same 10% + 2%. Kit houses in Birmingham include Media Dog Hire at the NEC, and Wex Rental, collected from Wex Photo Video on Hagley Road. Specialist kit can come up from London or across from Manchester.

How many cameras do I need for a conference at the ICC or the NEC?

Two at least: a wide holding the stage and a tight on the speaker. A third, roaming, picks up the audience and the details. For a panel, lock off the wide and put one operator on the host and one on whoever is speaking. Birmingham’s big venues don’t publish filming rules, so we agree the camera positions, the get-in and the power with the event team before the day.

Are your camera operators from Birmingham?

We crew camera operators from Birmingham where we can. Where the brief or the date needs someone else, they come from Manchester, London or Bristol, and the travel goes on the quote before anything is booked. New Street is 1 hour 17 minutes from London Euston on the fastest trains, about an hour and a half from Manchester Piccadilly and an hour and a quarter from Bristol Temple Meads; Birmingham International, for the airport and the NEC, is ten minutes out (checked October 2026). Our team works from London, with bases in Manchester, Bristol and Cornwall.

Can we film vox pops on a Birmingham street?

Yes, with permission. On council land that’s a Production Central WM permit: £84 plus VAT for a crew of up to ten, with five working days’ notice for a small-scale shoot, £182 more if you apply inside two business days, and a street permit isn’t refundable (checked October 2026). On a crew hire the permit is yours. More in filming permits in Birmingham.

How far ahead should I book a camera operator in Birmingham?

Our team reads every brief within 2 working hours and comes back with operators and a price. At a venue the event team usually sets the date. On the street, Production Central WM asks five working days for a small shoot. At New Street, Network Rail adds £500 to a booking made with under five working days’ notice (checked October 2026).
