The role

What costume and wardrobe do on your shoot

A wardrobe stylist chooses and fits what people wear on camera: buying, borrowing or hiring the clothes, fitting the cast before the shoot and dressing them on the day. A costume designer does the same for period or character work, designing and sourcing costume to the story. On set, wardrobe keeps every collar straight, every outfit in continuity, and a spare ready when the sea gets the first one.

On an interview, wardrobe is usually a note on the call sheet. On an advert, a fashion shoot or a drama it’s a department, with prep days before the shoot and a returns day after it. On the Cornish coast it also means doubles: a second of anything that might get wet, sandy or blown about, and dry layers for the cast between takes.

There’s a costume store in the county: Falmouth University’s Wardrobe Store on the Penryn campus, a pilot for Cornwall-based productions, with period dress, workwear and uniforms (checked October 2026). For bigger hires and uniform collections, costume comes down from upcountry by courier or with the stylist, and goes back the same way.

We’re a crew agency with 2,800+ freelance crew on our books across the UK, 30+ of them in Cornwall, and we scale a wardrobe department up as the shoot needs. We book stylists who live in Cornwall first; for a bigger cast or a period brief, they come down from Bristol, Devon or London, with travel and hotels on the quote before anything is booked.

  • Dressed to the brief. A mood board agreed, the clothes sourced, and nothing on camera that fights the landscape or the brand.
  • Fitted before the day. Fittings with the cast, alterations made, labels and logos dealt with.
  • Doubles for the weather. A second of anything that could meet the sea, the rain or the sand, and warm layers between takes.
  • Returned on time. Hires and borrowings tracked and returned, so nothing runs on after wrap.

How our rates work, and the two ways to book: crew rates in Cornwall.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book wardrobe for your own Cornish shoot, or have us take the whole production on.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
  • Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
  • Send the full price before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day
  • Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its permission and its public liability
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
  • Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
  • One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day with a wardrobe stylist, house to beach

A brand film with four cast at a house near Falmouth and on the beach below it, two looks each, after a fitting the week before. Times are an example; the call sheet sets the real ones.

  • Prep The week before Contemporary looks bought, period pieces chosen at Falmouth University’s Wardrobe Store by appointment, doubles of anything going near the water, and a fitting for each cast member.
  • 06:30 Wardrobe in Rails, a steamer and the labelled outfits in a spare room near make-up, with towels and a dryer for the beach.
  • 07:00 Cast dressed Each cast member in the first look after hair and make-up, checked against the mood board.
  • 08:00 Camera check Looks checked on the monitor: a fine stripe that strobes on camera swapped for a plain knit.
  • 10:00 The beach Coats and towels for the cast between takes, hems and sand checked before every one, and a continuity photo of every look.
  • 13:00 Lunch Anything wet dried or swapped for its double, and the second looks steamed.
  • 14:00 Change Cast changed in the order of the schedule, so the camera never waits and the tide doesn’t win.
  • 18:30 Wrap Everything back on the rails, labelled, and booked for return to the shop, the store or the costume house it came from.

The tide sets a beach schedule. ADMIRALTY’s EasyTide gives free tide predictions for today and the next six days (checked October 2026).

The two stylists behind The Mothershoppers chose ten pieces and styled each of them two ways on two models, in the gardens and glasshouses of the Bombay Sapphire Distillery. We filmed them at work and cut a long-form film, a 90-second cut, a teaser and ten outfit reels.

How we crew it · Cornwall

Falmouth’s wardrobe store, and the drive from upcountry

Contemporary looks are bought ahead, with receipts kept for anything that goes back. Period dress, workwear and uniforms can come from Falmouth University’s Wardrobe Store in Penryn, a pilot for Cornwall-based productions that asks for student experience rather than a fee, visited by appointment (checked October 2026). Anything bigger comes down from the costume houses upcountry, by courier or with the stylist. London Paddington is 4 hours 21 minutes from Truro on the fastest trains, so a fitting upcountry is a long day, planned into the prep. Doubles of anything going near the water go on the wardrobe budget.

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring a costume designer or stylist in Cornwall: questions

How much does a wardrobe stylist cost in Cornwall?

The APA/Bectu card puts a wardrobe stylist at £519–647 for an 11-hour day and a costume designer at £519–694, and we pay that in full. On top go our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, so a day starts at £581.28 + VAT. Prep and returns days are quoted as days, and the wardrobe itself is at cost. Our rates are national: Cornwall costs the same as anywhere else we crew, with any travel from outside Cornwall on its own line.

What does the insurance on a crew booking cover?

Two things. Employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and insurance on the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included.

Where does costume come from for a Cornish shoot?

Contemporary clothes are bought ahead and returned, with receipts kept. Period dress, workwear, uniforms and sportswear can come from Falmouth University’s Wardrobe Store on the Penryn campus. Bigger hires and specialist pieces come down from the costume houses upcountry, by courier or with the stylist. Kneehigh, the Cornish theatre company, has closed, and its sets, props and costumes went to its devisers and to Cornish arts organisations, so there’s no hire service there (checked October 2026). See props and wardrobe in Cornwall.

Can we use Falmouth University’s Wardrobe Store?

If your production is based in Cornwall, ask. Falmouth University’s Wardrobe Store on the Penryn campus is a pilot open to Cornwall-based productions of all sizes. It doesn’t charge at the moment; it asks productions to give its students industry experience instead. It holds medieval and 20th-century period dress, contemporary menswear and womenswear, workwear, uniforms and sportswear, and visits are by appointment (checked October 2026). Falmouth has taught Costume Design for Film & TV on the Penryn campus since September 2020, according to Screen Cornwall.

Can actors wear police uniform on a Cornish location?

Yes, with care. Cornwall Council’s filming code of practice says staged crimes, firearms and police uniforms need special guidance, reminds productions that impersonating a police officer is an offence, and asks for uniforms to be covered between takes. Tell us when you book, and it goes in with the permit application.

What happens to wardrobe on a wet day or in the sea?

We plan for it. Culdrose, on the Lizard, averages about 151 days a year with a millimetre of rain or more, and a mean wind of 12 knots (Met Office 1991–2020 averages). So the stylist buys or hires doubles of anything that might get wet or sandy, brings towels, coats and a dryer for the cast between takes, and schedules the beach scenes around the tide. ADMIRALTY’s EasyTide gives free tide predictions for today and the next six days (checked October 2026).

Do you have stylists who live in Cornwall?

Yes, and we book them first. We’re a crew agency with 2,800+ freelance crew on our books across the UK, 30+ of them in Cornwall, and we scale a wardrobe department up as the shoot needs. For a big cast, period work or a date when the local stylists are booked, they come down from Bristol, Devon or London, with travel and hotels on the quote before anything is booked.

What should contributors wear for an interview outdoors?

Plain, mid-tone colours; no fine stripes, small checks or big logos; a spare top; and a warm layer that looks right on camera, for between takes on a clifftop or a harbour wall. Ask them to bring it all on a hanger.
