The role

What a Steadicam operator does on your shoot

A Steadicam operator flies the camera on a stabilised rig: a vest, an articulated arm and a sled that balances the camera. It lets the shot follow people through doors, up stairs and across rooms, smoothly, at walking pace or faster, with a full-size cinema camera on it.

Steadicam is a brand name that became the name of the job. Operators own their rigs, which are expensive and set up for their own bodies, so the operator and the rig come as a pair.

There are fewer Steadicam operators than camera operators. We crew one from Birmingham where we can; on some dates the right operator comes from Manchester or London, with the travel on the quote before anything is booked. Tell us where the camera is coming from, Media Dog Hire at the NEC, Wex Rental’s collection point on Hagley Road or a London kit house, and the operator plans the rig to its weight.

  • One shot, no cut. Through the street door, across the lobby and into the lift, in a single move.
  • A heavy camera, flown. An ARRI Alexa or RED with cine lenses, which a handheld gimbal can’t carry for long.
  • Rehearsed with the cast. The move walked, timed and marked, so the actors and the camera hit the same spot.
  • Focus by wireless. With a focus puller on a monitor, the operator only has to frame.

What’s included

What the day rate covers

In the day rate

  • An 11-hour day, including an hour for lunch
  • Operating the camera on the rig, every take
  • Balancing and setting up the rig for your camera
  • Rehearsing the moves with the director and cast
  • Breaks between long takes, planned into the day
  • Their own vest, arm and sled

On top, each on its own line

  • Our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, on the whole quote
  • The rig and its accessories, quoted with the operator
  • A focus puller, for wide-open lenses
  • Travel from outside Birmingham, and mileage, parking and the Clean Air Zone charge where the day needs them, at cost

How our rates work, and the two ways to book: crew rates in Birmingham.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book a Steadicam operator for your own Birmingham shoot, or have us take the production on, the Production Central WM and Network Rail applications included.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% + 2% booking fee and insurance, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the crew, and pay them
  • Book kit, travel and hotels too, if you want them
  • Send the full price before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day
  • Employers’ liability for the crew we book, and insurance on kit we hire in

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its permission and its public liability
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

What the 2% insures: employers’ liability for every crew member we book, and the kit we hire in for you. Nothing else on the shoot. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

15% + 5% production fee, plus insurance and contingency, on the whole production budget. Quoted as a production.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the day
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio, travel and hotels, booked and paid in our name
  • Insurance for the whole shoot, public liability included, plus the risk assessment and the call sheet
  • One contract and one invoice, so overseas teams need no UK company

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

What the 5% pays for: our production insurance across the whole shoot, £10m public liability included, and the contingency.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day with a Steadicam operator, call to wrap

A brand film for a firm on Colmore Row: a walk-and-talk across the office floor, then a one-shot from the street to the boardroom. Times are an example; the call sheet sets the real ones.

  • 07:00 Security and the unload Crew names and the kit list checked by building security. The van unloads and leaves: Colmore Row is inside the Clean Air Zone, so it’s compliant or its £8 is on the quote (checked October 2026).
  • 08:00 Build and balance The camera stripped down for the sled, balanced and tuned. Wireless focus and video sender paired.
  • 09:00 Walk the route The move rehearsed with the director: street door, security gates, lift, final mark.
  • 09:45 Walk-and-talk Two people walking and talking across the floor, the operator walking backwards ahead of them, a grip guiding.
  • 11:30 Rest Out of the vest. Long takes on Steadicam are hard work, and the day is planned round it.
  • 14:00 The one-shot From the pavement on Colmore Row, on the Production Central WM street permit, through reception and up to the boardroom. Eight takes, the last one clean.
  • 18:00 Wrap Rig down, camera rebuilt for the main unit, takes logged, van back for the load-out.

Which rig

Steadicam, gimbal or something else?

Stabilised shots come from several kinds of rig. The camera, the move and the location decide which.

Steadicam Heavy cinema cameras, long takes From £950 a day + rig

A vest, arm and sled carrying a full cinema camera. Smooth and organic, and good for long, complex moves.

Best for adverts, drama, music videos and one-shot sequences, in the studio at Curzon Street or a venue like the ICC.

Handheld gimbal Light and fast From £529 a day

A DJI Ronin, RS or similar, carried by one person: quicker, cheaper and smaller on a towpath or a busy exhibition floor. See gimbal operators in Birmingham.

Best for walk-and-talks, events and social content.

Ronin 4D Stabilised camera, built in Quoted on the brief

A full-frame camera with stabilisation built in, operated by one person. Many Steadicam operators own one: on our Oxford job, the Steadicam operator flew one.

Best for documentary and run-and-gun days that still need to glide.

Dolly and track Precise, repeatable moves See grips

A dolly on tracks, pushed by a grip. Exactly the same move every take.

Best for slow, controlled moves on a flat floor. Kit on a Birmingham street needs Production Central WM’s permission, with seven days’ notice for kit on the highway (checked October 2026).

What it’s for

Music videos and drama

Long takes round the artist or the cast in Digbeth, home of Digbeth Loc. Studios.

Events at the ICC and the NEC

Moving among the guests with a heavier camera than a gimbal can carry.

Stabilised shots on our jobs, and how we crew them in Birmingham

Crew hire · Oxford · December 2025

A Steadicam operator, on the right rig for the day

A run-and-gun day in Oxford, for a US agency and a global tech company. We booked a Steadicam operator, who flew a Ronin 4D for it: lighter, quicker between set-ups, and right for the brief.

How we crew it · Birmingham

Steadicam through New Street, or a Colmore Row lobby

Birmingham New Street is a Network Rail managed station: corporate and commercial filming is £750 an hour for up to ten crew, two hours minimum, plus VAT, weekdays 10:00 to 16:00 or after 20:00 only, with up to £10m public liability (checked October 2026). Under five working days’ notice adds £500, and a shoot can’t run into the peak hours. In an office building the landlord says yes first, and security wants every name and the kit list. On the street, the rig goes on a Production Central WM permit. On a full production we apply; on a crew hire we tell you who to ask, and when.

Before you book

Things to know

The day

  • 11 hours, including an hour for lunch.
  • Overtime at card rates, agreed with you before it happens.

The rig and the building

  • The operator brings their own vest, arm and sled, priced on its own line.
  • Tell us the camera, lenses and kit house, so the rig is built for the weight.
  • Office buildings and venues want crew names and the kit list in advance. We send them.

Location and travel

  • An operator from Birmingham where we can; from Manchester or London where the date needs one, with the travel on the quote.
  • At New Street, running into the peak hours isn’t permitted: Network Rail’s surcharge for it is £5,000 (checked October 2026).
  • Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone covers every road inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, around the clock. A car or van below Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol pays £8 a day, an HGV or coach £50 (checked October 2026).

Paying and changes

  • Nothing to pay until you confirm the operator.
  • 50% by card when you book, 50% on receipt of the final rushes.
  • Every line on the quote: day rate, booking fee, kit, travel.
  • Cancellation terms are on every quote.

What our insurance covers

  • Employers’ liability for the operator we book: £10m.
  • Kit we hire in for you is insured. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote.
  • Nothing else on a crew hire. Public liability, the location and your own kit stay with you, and your venue will want your certificate. When we’re the producer of record, our policy covers the shoot.
  • Production Central WM asks for at least £5m public liability and a risk assessment before it issues a permit.
  • Network Rail asks for up to £10m public liability at New Street.

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring Steadicam in Birmingham: questions

How much does a Steadicam operator cost in Birmingham?

Our Steadicam operators start at £950 for an 11-hour day, paid to the operator in full. Their rig goes on its own line. On top go our 10% booking fee and 2% insurance, so the operator’s day comes to £1,064 + VAT before the rig and any travel from outside Birmingham. There’s no APA/Bectu card rate for Steadicam.

What does the insurance on a crew booking cover?

Two things. Employers’ liability for every crew member we book, up to £10m, and insurance on the kit we hire in for you. That’s what the 2% pays for. A large kit rental may need extra insurance, as its own line on the quote. The 2% doesn’t insure the rest of the shoot: public liability, the location, your own kit and anything you book yourself stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production, and our insurance covers the whole shoot, public liability included.

Can you use Steadicam at New Street station?

With Network Rail’s permission. Birmingham New Street is a Network Rail managed station: corporate and commercial filming is £750 an hour for up to ten crew, two hours minimum, plus VAT, weekdays 10:00 to 16:00 or after 20:00 only, with up to £10m public liability (checked October 2026). Weekends are generally fine. Under five working days’ notice adds £500, and running into the peak hours isn’t permitted. On a crew hire the booking is yours; on a full production we make it.

Do we need a permit for Steadicam on a Birmingham street?

Usually. On council land that’s a Production Central WM permit: £84 plus VAT for a crew of up to ten and £191 for 11 to 24, with five working days’ notice for a small-scale shoot (checked October 2026). Kit on the highway needs seven days, and filming after 23:00 is agreed in advance. Private land, such as an office forecourt, needs the owner’s say-so on top. More in filming permits in Birmingham.

Can you fly Steadicam at the ICC or the NEC?

Yes, with the venue’s agreement. Birmingham’s big venues, the ICC, the NEC, bp pulse LIVE and Utilita Arena among them, don’t publish filming rules, so the event team and the venue set the route, the get-in and the power. Tell us the venue and the date, and we ask before the day.

Steadicam or gimbal: which do I need?

A gimbal is lighter, cheaper and quicker: fine for a mirrorless or compact cinema camera on a busy towpath or exhibition floor. Steadicam carries a full-size cinema camera, holds long takes better and moves more naturally. For an advert or a one-shot sequence, book Steadicam.

Are your Steadicam operators from Birmingham?

We crew Steadicam operators from Birmingham where we can. Where the brief or the date needs someone else, they come from Manchester, London or Bristol, and the travel goes on the quote before anything is booked. There are fewer of them than camera operators, so tell us the date early. New Street is 1 hour 17 minutes from London Euston on the fastest trains, about an hour and a half from Manchester Piccadilly and an hour and a quarter from Bristol Temple Meads; Birmingham International, for the airport and the NEC, is ten minutes out (checked October 2026). Our team works from London, with bases in Manchester, Bristol and Cornwall.

How far ahead should I book Steadicam in Birmingham?

Our team reads every brief within 2 working hours. The location usually sets the date: five working days for a small-scale Production Central WM permit and seven for kit on the highway, and five working days at New Street before Network Rail’s late fee applies (checked October 2026).
