The role

What a gimbal operator does on your shoot

A gimbal operator runs a camera on a motorised stabiliser, such as a DJI Ronin 2 or RS 4 Pro, which keeps the picture level and smooth while they move. It’s the quickest way to a moving shot: walking interviews, tracking people through a building, or following the action at an event.

Balance is most of the job. A camera that isn’t balanced fights the motors and drifts, so a good operator rebalances every time the lens or the rig changes.

  • Moving shots, fast. Built, balanced and rolling in minutes, where a dolly takes half an hour.
  • Walk-and-talks that hold. Walking backwards ahead of two people, framing them steady all the way down the block.
  • Into tight spaces. Through doors and up stairs, into elevators, cabs and kitchens.
  • Ready for remote focus. Wireless focus and video, so a 1st AC or the director can watch.

How our rates work, and the two ways to book: crew rates in New York.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book a gimbal operator for your own New York shoot, or have us take the production on, the route and its permits included.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% booking fee, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel. Payroll and insurance at cost, on their own line.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the New York crew
  • Every crew member employed for the job: payroll, workers’ compensation and COIs
  • Book kit, vans and travel too, if you want them
  • Send the full price, in dollars, before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its COI and any Mayor’s Office permit
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

Payroll and insurance are their own line on the quote, at cost: payroll for each crew member, the insurance they need for the job, New York workers’ compensation included, and the certificates of insurance your location asks for.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

From $20,000 for a New York production; most land between that and $75,000. One quote, in dollars, every line shown.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the job
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio and travel, booked in the production’s name
  • The production’s insurance, the COIs and the Mayor’s Office permit
  • One quote and one contract with us, wherever you’re based

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

The production’s insurance, the crew’s payroll and any permits are lines in the quote, so you see each one before you sign.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day with a gimbal operator, call to wrap

An interview series for a fashion brand in SoHo: walking interviews on the sidewalk, then the store and the studio upstairs. Times are an example; the call sheet sets the real ones.

  • 08:00 Build and balance Camera on the gimbal, lens chosen, balanced on all three axes, motors tuned.
  • 08:45 Walk the route The block walked with the producer: where the talent starts, where the conversation turns, and where the sidewalk narrows under the scaffolding.
  • 09:30 Walking interview Backwards ahead of the talent, a PA spotting the ground behind and the people coming the other way. Hand-held, nothing blocking the sidewalk.
  • 11:30 Inside Through the store and up the stairs to the studio, rebalanced for a wider lens.
  • 13:00 Meal break Batteries changed, cards to the DIT or the producer.
  • 14:00 Details and B-roll Slow push-ins and reveals along the rails and shelves, the street through the window.
  • 18:30 Wrap Cards handed over, the kit packed for the van or, on a light day, the subway.

Which rig

Which gimbal set-up do you need?

The camera decides the gimbal, and on a New York sidewalk the gimbal can decide whether you need a permit.

Hand-held gimbal DJI RS 4 Pro or similar From $750 a day + kit

Carries a Sony FX3, FX6 or a mirrorless camera. One person, fast, and small enough to stay hand-held on a sidewalk.

Best for walk-and-talks, events, social content and B-roll.

Large gimbal DJI Ronin 2 or similar From $750 a day + kit

Carries a cinema camera with cine lenses, often on an Easyrig or a support vest for long days, with wireless focus.

Best for brand films and commercials with heavier cameras, in a studio or a location you control.

Vehicle mounts On a car or a tracking vehicle Quoted on the brief

The gimbal on a car mount or a tracking vehicle, operated by remote and rigged by a grip. Production vehicles on a New York street need a permit that lists every one.

Best for driving shots and fast action.

Ronin 4D Camera and stabiliser in one Quoted on the brief

A full-frame camera with stabilisation and autofocus built in. One operator, documentary speed.

Best for run-and-gun days that still need to glide.

Steadicam Heavier cameras, longer takes From $1,500 a day

For a full-size cinema camera and long, complex moves. See Steadicam operators in New York.

Best for commercials, drama and one-take sequences.

Gimbals in New York, and how we crew them

How we crew it · New York

A walk-and-talk on a New York sidewalk

A hand-held camera on a City sidewalk, with no exclusive use and no parked production vehicles, needs no film permit from the Mayor’s Office. So we keep a walk-and-talk small: the gimbal operator, the talent, sound on radio mics, and a PA watching the route. The van drops the kit and goes, because without a permit there’s no parking privilege. If the day grows past that, we apply, 48 to 72 business hours ahead.

How we crew it · New York

Gimbal shots in a New York park

Standing in a City park with a hand-held camera isn’t a permit activity, but a crew with more kit needs a Parks film shoot request first, at least five business days ahead, then the Mayor’s Office permit. The High Line, Bryant Park, Hudson River Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park run their own processes through their conservancies, so we check the route against them when we plan the day.

Before you book

Things to know

The day

  • 10 hours, plus a meal break.
  • Any overtime is agreed with you before it happens.

Kit and getting around

  • Their own gimbal, or one hired in, at a day rate on its own line.
  • Tell us the camera and lenses when you book, so the gimbal can carry them.
  • Most crew travel by subway; kit moves by cargo van, which parks on the street only with a permit.

Paying and changes

  • Nothing to pay until you confirm the operator.
  • 50% when you book, 50% on receipt of the final rushes.
  • Every line on the quote: day rate, booking fee, payroll and insurance, kit, travel.
  • Cancellation terms are on every quote.

Employment and insurance

  • Every gimbal operator we book is employed for the job, on payroll, with New York workers’ compensation.
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) for your location or permit, naming whoever needs naming, on request.
  • On a crew hire the location, its COI, the permit and your own general liability stay with you. When we’re the producer of record, the production carries them.
  • In New York, Here Now Films books its crews through established New York production companies, so every crew member is employed, on payroll and fully insured for the job.

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring a gimbal operator in New York: questions

How much does a gimbal operator cost in New York?

Our gimbal operators in New York start at $750 for a 10-hour day, and the operator is paid all of it. There’s no published union scale for gimbal operators in New York. On top goes our 10% booking fee, so one day comes to $825, before payroll and insurance (at cost, on the quote), the gimbal kit and travel. The gimbal goes on its own line, whether it’s the operator’s or hired in.

Who employs the crew, and are they insured?

Every crew member we book in New York is employed for the job and fully insured: payroll, New York workers’ compensation, and certificates of insurance for your location or permit. Payroll and insurance show as their own line on the quote, at cost. On a crew hire, the location, its COI and the permit stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production.

Do we need a film permit in New York?

Not if the crew is hand-held or on a tripod, takes no exclusive use of a street or park, and parks no production vehicles. Equipment beyond that, parked production vehicles or exclusive use need a permit from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment: $500 for each 14-day period, with at least $1,000,000 of general liability naming the City of New York (checked October 2026). The Film Office processes most permits 48 to 72 business hours before the shoot. More in filming permits in New York.

Does a gimbal count as hand-held for a New York film permit?

The Film Office decides, so we ask before the day. No permit is needed for a hand-held camera or a camera on a tripod, with no exclusive use of City property and no parked production vehicles. Where no permit is needed, the Mayor’s Office offers an optional Letter in Lieu of Permit for exterior City property.

Gimbal or Steadicam?

A gimbal is the right call for most corporate, event and social work: quicker, lighter and cheaper, especially on a crowded sidewalk. Steadicam carries a heavier cinema camera and holds long, complex takes better, so it earns its place on commercials, drama and one-take moves through a building. If you’re not sure, tell us the camera and the longest move, and we’ll say which.

Can a gimbal shot be filmed from a car in New York?

Yes, with a car mount or a tracking vehicle and a remote operator, rigged by a grip. Production vehicles that want to park on a New York street need a film permit, with every vehicle listed on it, and one permit covers one shoot day. Anything that needs the NYPD’s help needs a permit too, and the permit brings that police assistance at no charge. The Film Office processes most permits 48 to 72 business hours before the shoot.

Can a gimbal operator use our camera?

Yes, if the gimbal can carry it. Tell us the camera body, lens and accessories when you book, and we match the rig to the weight. If the camera is coming from a New York rental house, tell us which one so the operator can balance it at prep. If it’s flying in with you, an ATA Carnet covers its temporary import into the US.
