Here Now Films to produce four-part athlete interview series for The Athletic

We’re delighted to share that Here Now Films has been commissioned by The Athletic to produce a new four-part series of interview-led micro-documentaries with top-tier football talent.

This follows the success of our pilot episode with The Athletic earlier this year, shot and filmed in Manchester. The response to the pilot was brilliant — and now we’re scaling that blueprint across four episodes.

While the finer details are under wraps for now (NDAs firmly in place), here’s what we can share:

Our role

  • Story development: collaborating closely with The Athletic’s editorial team to shape episode themes, script structures and key visual set up.
  • Pre-production: logistics, schedules and talent coordination spanning multiple UK locations.
  • Production: UK wide film crew management and direction, blending action packed interviews with cinematic, studio-style B-roll that lives comfortably across digital and social.
  • Post: Post-production, edit, grade, mix and deliverables optimised for multi-platform distribution.

Why this matters

For us, this project sits perfectly at the intersection of premium branded documentary and sports storytelling — a space we love to operate in. It’s another chance to demonstrate how documentary discipline can elevate brand and editorial content without losing authenticity or social apeal.

What to expect

Across the series, we’ll be exploring moments that define elite performance — perspective, pressure, preparation and the people around the athletes who make the impossible feel inevitable. We can’t name names yet, but the lineup is… exciting.

Where we’ll be

All four shoots will take place across the UK, tapping into our national network of trusted crew and locations to keep production nimble and editorially sharp.

A note on the pilot

If you missed it, we wrote about the first collaboration with The Athletic and The New York Times company last year — a behind-the-scenes look at how we approached access, schedule pressure and craft. It’s a good primer for the tone of this series.
