For Jam Prime

Domino’s, TUI and Belvoir

Three PR stunts we filmed for Jam Prime and Jam Press in 2023: a jetpack pizza delivery at Glastonbury, a 78-year-old’s first waterslide, and elderflower from the bush to the bottle.

Jam Prime puts brands in the news with stunts, and its news agency, Jam Press, takes the stories to the newsdesks. In 2023 they brought us in to film three: a jetpack delivering Domino’s to campers at Glastonbury, a 78-year-old’s first ride down a waterslide for TUI, and Belvoir Farm’s elderflower going from the bush to the bottle in 24 hours. Each one happened once, and each had to land while it was still news.

Rocket Man, for Domino’s

Hero film, portrait cut, B-roll and stills · Glastonbury, Somerset

For Glastonbury 2023, the year Elton John headlined, Domino’s and its creative agency One Green Bean set up a trial delivery with Gravity Industries: a jet suit pilot taking pizza to campers at Pennard Hill Farm, with the order picked up from the Domino’s shop in Glastonbury. Jam Prime ran the press and brought us in to film it and take the pictures.

The budget covered one flight in one place, about ten minutes in the air, so everything was planned around it. Joe Lawson of Drone Overview flew an FPV drone alongside the pilot, Ollie Couch filmed from the ground with Ed producing, and Morgan Cartlidge shot the stills, editing them in the car on the way home so they were with Jam Prime and One Green Bean that evening. The film was signed off the next day and went out to the wire the morning after.

The Independent ran it on 21 June and it made ITV’s Lorraine. Jam Prime’s coverage report counts 78 pieces, with an estimated 8.81 million views.

The Senior Slider, for TUI

30-second and 90-second films, stills and social footage · Manavgat, Turkey

TUI marked the waterslide’s hundredth birthday with a competition to find a first-time senior slider. Bob Carter, 78, won it, and on 26 July 2023 we filmed his first ride at Splashworld, the water park at TUI’s Ali Bey Club in Manavgat, for TUI and One Green Bean, with Jam Prime on the press.

Four of us flew out with the kit in four extra bags: Ed producing, Ollie Couch on camera and sound, Adam Watson on drone and second camera, and Morgan Cartlidge on stills, with Jam Prime’s Doug Shields interviewing Bob. The park closed to the public at quarter to six for us. Bob went down in 31 degrees with a camera on his ring and the drone following him, while Ed filmed from the next slide along.

We cut a 30-second film of the slide and a 90-second film with Bob before and after, plus stills and raw portrait footage for TUI’s social team. Bob’s story ran in the Mirror on 7 August and in Surrey Live.

Bush to bottle, for Belvoir Farm

A two-minute film, a news video, social cuts, drone and stills · Belvoir Farm, Leicestershire

Belvoir Farm challenged the gardener and TV presenter Daisy Payne to pick the first elderflower of the year and turn it into bottled cordial within 24 hours. We filmed the challenge in June 2023 with Daisy and Pev Manners, Belvoir’s managing director, for Belvoir and its PR agency Intelligent Profile, with Jam Prime on the press.

Jam Prime booked us for photo, video, drone and the edit, and the brief grew in the week before. Belvoir wanted Daisy presenting as she does on television, a two-minute film for its YouTube channel as well as the news video, and scenes that would cut down for social. We added a camera so both Daisy’s and Pev’s faces were covered, and the shot list was signed off by the client, the agency and Daisy’s agent before the day.

We delivered the first social clip two days after the shoot. Then came the full film, five six-second cuts for social, and a longer clip of Pev singing.

Made for the newsdesk

A PR film has a different job from an advert. It has to read as news: short, landscape, plainly real, with the brand in it rather than over it. Domino’s capped its film at 45 seconds for that reason.

One plan, agreed first

Every shot list was agreed with the brand and the agency before the day, and with the talent’s agent where there was one. On Domino’s we wrote the storyboard from One Green Bean’s brief, and got to the action quicker when they asked us to.

Stills and film from one crew

Morgan Cartlidge shot the stills on all three, working beside the film crew, so the pictures and the film come from the same moments.

A news cut and a brand cut

The papers want it quick and the brand wants it finished, and they’re rarely the same edit. On TUI we made both: a news cut for Jam Prime and a finished film for TUI.

Small crews

Four or five of us on each job, stills included. Enough to cover a one-off moment from the air and the ground without getting in its way.

“Despite the various hurdles, the team were professional, brought great energy (particularly with pumping up Bob and his family)…”

Questions

Who filmed the Domino’s jetpack pizza delivery at Glastonbury?

Here Now Films filmed Rocket Man, the Domino’s jetpack pizza delivery for Glastonbury 2023, for the PR agency Jam Prime and Domino’s creative agency One Green Bean, with Gravity Industries flying the jet suit. We shot the film, the FPV drone footage and the stills on 19 June 2023. The coverage ran to 78 pieces, with an estimated 8.81 million views.

How do you film a PR stunt that only happens once?

Plan the film around the one moment, and agree the plan first. Domino’s had budget for one flight of about ten minutes, so the shot list put an FPV drone in the air beside the pilot, a camera on the ground and a stills photographer alongside, and the brand and both agencies had signed it off before the day.

How quickly can a PR film be turned round?

Quickly enough for the news. Domino’s asked for its content to go out within 36 hours of the shoot. Our stills were with the agencies the same evening, the film was signed off the following evening, and the story ran in the Independent on 21 June 2023, two days after we filmed it.

Do you film PR stunts abroad?

Yes. For TUI we took a crew of four to Turkey, with the kit in our own luggage, to film Bob Carter, the 78-year-old winner of its First Time Senior Slider competition, at the Ali Bey Club in Manavgat. We delivered a 30-second and a 90-second film, stills and portrait footage for TUI’s social team.

What does a PR film cost?

Our productions start at £9,500. The number moves with the crew, travel, drone work and how fast the edit has to land. Tell us the idea and the date, and we’ll come back with a cost. More on our brand video production.
