The role

What a camera operator does on your shoot

A camera operator runs the camera: framing, moving and holding the shot in focus, to the plan of the DP or the director. On a small shoot they often light the interview too. On a bigger one they operate one camera of several while the DP watches the look.

Plenty of New York operators own a camera and bring it, so one booking can cover the kit too. On our jobs here, a crew’s own RED Komodo came in at $450 a day with tripods and accessories (checked October 2026), on its own line on the quote.

New York crews, booked and run by our producers: on a multi-camera day we book operators who’ve worked together, and match their bodies and settings before the call.

  • Framed to the plan. Wides, singles and close-ups that cut together, on sticks, on the shoulder or on a gimbal.
  • Focus that holds. On a guest who leans in to answer, a walking interview, or a long lens from the back of a ballroom.
  • Kit that turns up ready. Their own camera, cards and batteries, checked the night before.
  • Multi-camera, matched. Two or three operators on the same settings and timecode, so the edit doesn’t have to fix it.

What’s included

What the day rate covers

In the day rate

  • A 10-hour day, plus a meal break
  • Operating one camera, to the DP’s or director’s plan
  • Framing, focus and exposure on every take
  • Setting up and striking their camera position
  • Matching settings and timecode across cameras
  • A card and battery check at wrap

On top, each on its own line

  • Our 10% booking fee, on the whole quote
  • Payroll and insurance for the job, at cost
  • Their camera kit, at a day rate on its own line
  • A 1st AC or DIT, if the day needs one
  • Travel outside the five boroughs, and any cars or vans, at cost

How our rates work, and the two ways to book: crew rates in New York.

Two ways to book

Crew hire or full production: who’s the producer of record?

One question sets the price: who’s the producer of record? Book operators for your own shoot, or have us take the production on.

Crew hire

You run the shoot.

10% booking fee, on everything we book for you: crew, kit and travel. Payroll and insurance at cost, on their own line.

We do

  • Find, book and brief the New York crew
  • Every crew member employed for the job: payroll, workers’ compensation and COIs
  • Book kit, vans and travel too, if you want them
  • Send the full price, in dollars, before anything is booked
  • One person to call all day

You do

  • Run the shoot, or your producer does
  • The plan, the schedule and the call sheet
  • The location, its COI and any Mayor’s Office permit
  • Responsibility for the production: you’re the producer of record

Payroll and insurance are their own line on the quote, at cost: payroll for each crew member, the insurance they need for the job, New York workers’ compensation included, and the certificates of insurance your location asks for.

Full production

We’re the producer of record.

From $20,000 for a New York production; most land between that and $75,000. One quote, in dollars, every line shown.

We do

  • Our producer plans it with you and runs the job
  • Locations, permits, kit, studio and travel, booked in the production’s name
  • The production’s insurance, the COIs and the Mayor’s Office permit
  • One quote and one contract with us, wherever you’re based

You do

  • The creative calls
  • Signing off the plan and the budget

The production’s insurance, the crew’s payroll and any permits are lines in the quote, so you see each one before you sign.

Not sure which you need? If your own producer or director will run the day, it’s crew hire. If you want us to take the production on, it’s a full production quote.

On the day

A day with a camera operator, call to wrap

A two-session panel recording in an event space on a high floor in Midtown: three cameras, a host and two guests. Times are an example; the call sheet sets the real ones.

  • 07:00 Loading dock The van unloads at the building’s dock in its booked slot and moves off, and the kit goes up in the freight elevator. Without a permit there’s no parking on the street.
  • 07:45 Camera positions A locked-off wide, one camera on the host, one on whoever is speaking. White balance, frame rate and picture profile matched; timecode jammed so the edit can sync.
  • 09:00 First panel Host and one guest. Each operator holds a single while the wide holds everything.
  • 11:00 Second panel Cards swapped and backed up, a third chair on set. One operator stays on the host, the other follows the conversation.
  • 13:00 Meal break The room turned round for cutaways while the crew eats.
  • 13:45 Cutaways Hands, the room and the view, the guests arriving, and a few vertical frames for social.
  • 17:30 Wrap Kit down the freight elevator, cards checked and copied, drives handed over.

Which kind

Which camera operator do you need?

What you’re filming decides which of these you book.

Operator with kit One person, one camera kit From $750 a day + kit

Their own Sony FX6, FX9 or RED Komodo, with lenses, sticks and often a small LED kit, priced on its own line.

Best for interviews, testimonials and one-camera event coverage.

Multi-camera team Two or three cameras, matched Per operator

Two or three operators on matched cameras and timecode, so panels and fireside chats cut cleanly.

Best for conferences, panels and fireside chats in Midtown event spaces and Chelsea lofts.

Lighting camera operator Lights and shoots From $750 a day

Lights the interview and operates, with no DP on the crew. Fine for simple, well-planned talking heads.

For a designed look, book a DP in New York instead.

Union camera operator On a signatory commercial Scale $1,138

On a production signatory to the IATSE/AICP commercial agreement, the operator is engaged at scale for a 10-hour call, with fringes and payroll on top.

Best for commercials that need a union crew. On corporate and branded work our default is non-union.

Gimbal and Steadicam Moving shots See their own pages

Walk-and-talks, tracking shots and moving B-roll need a stabilised rig and someone who flies it every week. See gimbal operators and Steadicam operators in New York.

Best for events and brand films with movement.

What it’s for

What people book a camera operator for in New York

Fireside chats and panels

Multi-camera conversations in daylight lofts in Chelsea and Tribeca, and in event spaces on high floors in Midtown.

Interview days for overseas agencies

Agencies from Europe and the UK that run the edit themselves and need matched cameras in New York. See filming in New York from abroad.

Conferences and investor events

Hotel ballrooms and auditoriums, on two or three cameras and a wide from the back.

Second camera for a DP

A tight on the interview, or B-roll on the sidewalk outside the office.

Vox pops and social content

Hand-held or on a tripod on the sidewalk, with nothing blocking it, which needs no film permit.

Camera operators on our jobs in New York

Our work · Upper East Side, New York · September 2026

Nevis × Focus, an announcement film

One afternoon in a panelled library on the Upper East Side, for Nevis and Focus Financial Partners: three half-hour interviews with Mark Swan, Adam Birenbaum and Justin Ferri, then the room reset for a three-way conversation on five cameras. The library came empty, so everything on screen was brought in. A New York crew shot it twelve days after the first email, and our own team cut it, five cuts in eight days, then graded and mixed it.

Our work · Chelsea, New York · April 2026

An extra camera on the day, for AlTi × Nevis

The Future of AI in Wealth Management: a multi-camera fireside chat filmed on 16 April 2026 in a daylight loft on West 24th Street, booked for the day. Nancy Curtin of AlTi hosted Phil Dundas, AlTi’s CTO, and Mark Swan, CEO of Nevis. On the day we added an extra camera operator and camera to the New York crew. Our own team cut, graded and mixed it, with cutdowns for LinkedIn and YouTube.

A camera operator for an agency’s one-day shoot

An agency’s one-day shoot in New York, with a director and a DP flown in by the client. We booked a local camera operator alongside a producer, an assistant producer, a sound recordist, a gaffer, hair and make-up and a stills photographer, so the visiting pair walked onto a set that was already crewed.

It was a pleasure collaborating with the team at Here Now Films (Ed, Meg, and Ted). They created two videos for our drug and alcohol charity, WithYou in Cornwall, highlighting the recovery journeys of our clients and showcasing the outstanding work our staff does every day. They approached the filming process with sensitivity and empathy, helping our clients and staff feel at ease throughout the shoot. We are thrilled with the final results of both films and would gladly work with the team again in the future.

Matt Dunstan
Here Now Films is always my first call when filming internationally in the UK. This was my second time working with them, and once again, they delivered above and beyond. On our most recent trip, they supported us a phenomenal key production assistant throughout the UK and a great DP in Manchester (a new city for us). They matched the exact camera and lighting kit I use back in the States keeping things consistent for our brand. What really stood out this time was the support from our key PA. He personally ushered me and my U.S.-based DP to every single shoot location throughout the week, and even drove me from London to Manchester. Always on time, if not early, and an excellent driver. I’ve always been uncomfortable driving on the opposite side of the road when traveling internationally, so that accommodation made a huge difference. The first time we worked together in London, they provided a full crew and both shoots ran flawlessly. Communication is always smooth, the team is kind, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Most importantly, our clients are always happy when they’re involved. Looking forward to many more future projects together. Here Now is truly a go-to partner in the UK!
Response from the owner:Hey Matt, Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly blown away by the above. If you ever need film crew support or video production assistance across London or the rest of the UK, we're here to help. Hope you and the team have a great end to the year in the USA! Best, Ed
Will Harris
These guys are fab and we will keep working with them in the future
Response from the owner:Thanks a lot Will, next time you need a TV Commercial we’ve got you covered.
Joe Devine
I worked with a crew of four people from Here Now Films for a pilot project. Morgan, the organiser, was very proficient and quick to respond to communications. We met for the first time on the day with a bit of a hazy plan for a tricky shoot, but the crew took it all in their step and the final product was great. Would recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for the kind words Joe, it was a pleasure working on this with you. If you need us again, we’d be stoked to jump in and help.

Questions

Hiring a camera operator in New York: questions

How much does a camera operator cost in New York?

Our camera operators in New York start at $750 for a 10-hour day, and the operator is paid all of it. Union scale for a camera operator under the IATSE/AICP commercial agreement is $1,138 a day, before fringes. On top goes our 10% booking fee, so one day comes to $825, before payroll and insurance (at cost, on the quote), kit and travel. An operator’s own camera kit goes on the same quote at a day rate.

Who employs the crew, and are they insured?

Every crew member we book in New York is employed for the job and fully insured: payroll, New York workers’ compensation, and certificates of insurance for your location or permit. Payroll and insurance show as their own line on the quote, at cost. On a crew hire, the location, its COI and the permit stay with you, because you’re the producer of record. If you’d rather we were, it’s quoted as a full production.

Do your New York camera operators bring their own kit?

Most New York camera operators can bring their own kit: a Sony FX6 or FX9, or a RED Komodo, with lenses, a tripod and often a small LED kit, on its own line at a day rate. On our jobs here, a crew’s own RED Komodo came in at $450 a day with tripods and accessories (checked October 2026). Anything else comes from one of the rental houses in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island City.

How many cameras do I need for a fireside chat or a panel?

Three cameras is the usual answer for a three-person conversation: a wide that holds everyone and two operators on singles, one on the host and one on whoever is answering. Two can do it, with the wide locked off and one operator following the talk, but you lose the reaction shots. On the AlTi × Nevis fireside chat in Chelsea we added an extra operator and camera on the day.

Do we need a film permit in New York?

Not if the crew is hand-held or on a tripod, takes no exclusive use of a street or park, and parks no production vehicles. Equipment beyond that, parked production vehicles or exclusive use need a permit from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment: $500 for each 14-day period, with at least $1,000,000 of general liability naming the City of New York (checked October 2026). The Film Office processes most permits 48 to 72 business hours before the shoot. More in filming permits in New York.

Can we film in a Midtown office building?

Yes, once the building agrees, and the building sets the terms. Expect to send crew names and a kit list to security, book a loading dock and freight elevator slot, and supply a certificate of insurance naming the building, often at high limits. Ask for the requirement before you lock the date: on one of our jobs, an umbrella policy for a higher limit cost about $2,000 per million (checked October 2026). On a crew hire the COI is yours; we tell you what to ask for.

How far ahead should I book a camera operator in New York?

Our team reads every brief within 2 working hours and comes back with operators and a price. Our latest New York shoot, Nevis × Focus, was filmed twelve days after the first email. In a building, the COI and the freight elevator usually set the date. On the street, a film permit is processed 48 to 72 business hours before the shoot, and Times Square takes seven business days.
